Democrats Have a Drinking Problem (But Not in a Good Way)

Democrats are out of control. It's time to admit they have a problem and seek help. In recent days, several Democratic lawmakers have come under fire for excessive drinking—but not in a fun way.

Eric Swalwell, the former congressman and notorious degenerate accused of sexual assault, routinely used campaign funds to pay for alcohol. Swalwell placed more than a hundred orders on Drizly, the now-defunct alcohol delivery app, between 2020 and 2024. His prolific booze purchases accounted for almost 25 percent of Drizly payments by political campaigns, campaign committees, and PACs during that period, according to federal election records.

Swalwell was a founding member of the "Cool Kids Clique," a group of Democratic lawmakers known for their heavy drinking and shameless philandering. One of the cool kids, Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D., Calif.), was seen making out with a much younger Democratic aide outside a party Swalwell hosted in 2023. Gomez, 51, was married with a small child at the time. Swalwell, 45, has three children and has been married to his second wife since 2016. Another member of the clique, Sen. Ruben Gallego (D., Ariz.), served his first wife with divorce papers in 2016 when she was nine months pregnant.

Democrats at the state level are also disgracing themselves with public drunkenness. Joe Fitzgibbon, the majority leader of the Washington state House of Representatives, had to apologize in February after slurring his words and falling asleep during an appropriations committee hearing. "This was a painful and embarrassing lesson, one I won't forget," Fitzgibbon said.

It would be natural to assume the Democratic Party's drinking problem is most prevalent among male lawmakers, but the evidence suggests otherwise. Many Americans have expressed concern about Hillary Clinton's relationship with alcohol. The failed presidential candidate recalled imbibing a "fair share of Chardonnay" to console herself after losing to Donald Trump in 2016. Kamala Harris also faced persistent rumors and allegations about her alcohol consumption. While we can't prove that Clinton and Harris have a substance abuse problem, it might explain why both women were such terrible candidates.

Congresswoman Susie Lee's recent behavior bears the hallmarks of chronic drinking. Earlier this month, the Democrat from Nevada fired off a profanity-laced X post at around 1 a.m. in response to an article about Trump's plan to attend oral arguments at the Supreme Court. "So fucking fucked up," Lee wrote. "I'll pray they fuck him to his face. Sorry, I say fuck a lot these days." Conservative commentator Steve Guest suggested the congresswoman was either "blackout drunk when she tweeted this or it was a staffer posting from her account."

Less than three weeks later, Lee was reportedly spotted in a Whole Foods buying wine at 11:40 a.m.

Copious alcohol consumption might explain why Lee took part in a bizarre "Choose Your Fighter" TikTok video alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and other Democrats in 2025. Even CNN's Abby Phillip found it appalling. Conservative commentator Scott Jennings spoke for millions of Americans when he described it as "the dumbest thing I've ever seen."

Lee has demonstrated an eagerness to attend alcohol-fueled celebrations—even if it means putting her fellow citizens at risk. On several occasions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the congresswoman defied her state's mask mandate to party with rich folks and celebrities. In October 2021, Lee was photographed dancing (somewhat tipsily) without a mask at a ritzy gala honoring Chinese-Malaysian billionaire K.T. Lim. The event was sponsored by Moët Hennessy, the French wine and spirits conglomerate.

California governor Gavin Newsom has also faced criticism for glugging wine at fancy restaurants during the pandemic. He has also faced questions about providing alcohol to minors. This week, a video resurfaced from a 2006 interview in which Newsom, then 38 and mayor of San Francisco, lashed out when confronted with allegations of letting his 19-year-old girlfriend drink wine at an official event.

Republicans have also faced allegations of problematic drinking, but these instances have typically involved behavior that most Americans would describe as fun, whereas Democrats seem to be abusing alcohol as a means to commit sexual crimes, cheat on their wives, endanger the lives of their fellow citizens, and illegally inebriate their barely-legal girlfriends.

Jack Schlossberg, the (allegedly) sober yet deeply troubled Kennedy scion, is currently favored to win a seat in Congress. Despite lacking any discernible skills, Schlossberg is outpolling his Democratic primary opponents due to the fact that liberals continue to revere the Kennedy family—a vile consortium of bloated alcoholics and chronic sex pests—for reasons that defy explanation.

Swalwell's devious escapades are in keeping with the Democratic tradition established by Schlossberg's great uncle, Ted Kennedy, who suffered no consequences for driving his car off a bridge and killing Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy, who went on to serve in the U.S. Senate for four decades after the incident, is best known for making a "waitress sandwich" with former Sen. Chris Dodd (D., Conn.) during an alcohol-fueled romp in 1985.

Donald Trump, by contrast, has been a teetotaler his entire life.
