GLP-1 Drugs Don’t Work the Same for Everyone—Here’s Why
GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are often described as breakthrough weight loss solutions, but they don’t work the same for everyone, according to a new study in Nature.
Some people lose significant weight, while others barely respond, or struggle with side effects. Dr. Michael Snyder, In-House Obesity Specialist at FuturHealth, and Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Center at Rose Medical Center, says the difference isn’t random; it comes down to your biology.
Why GLP-1 Results Vary So Much
“Variability is actually the rule, not the exception, when it comes to GLP-1 response,” he said.
These medications act on the body’s ability to regulate appetite, glucose, insulin, and digestion, and those systems don’t function identically from person to person. Genetics can influence how you respond to the drug. Your metabolism affects how quickly it’s processed. Your hormones affect hunger cues, feelings of fullness, and digestion.
Why Weight Loss Isn’t Just About Willpower
Simply put, it’s not a matter of willpower.
“We’re seeing more evidence that factors like genetics, hormone regulation, and metabolic adaptation play a central role in how the body stores and loses weight,” Dr. Snyder said.
This helps explain why traditional approaches that rely solely on diet and exercise don’t work the same way for everyone. This is why medical therapies like GLP-1s can be so useful when they target those underlying biology, not behavior.
Your Daily Habits Still Shape Results
Dr. Snyder points to the concept of epigenetics—how your behaviors influence how your body functions.
You can’t change your genes. But you can influence how they’re expressed through nutrition, activity, sleep, and medical treatment.
That’s where many people on a weight loss journey can maximize, or limit, their results.
What Most People Get Wrong About GLP-1 Drugs
Social media has fueled unrealistic expectations around these medications. One of the biggest misconceptions? That they’re effortless.
It is not as easy as just “do a shot and lose weight,” Dr. Snyder said.
In reality, results vary widely, side effects differ from person to person, and most importantly, progress is often gradual.
“Similarly, side effects like nausea can differ widely in both intensity and duration. Setting realistic expectations upfront helps reduce frustration and allows patients to stay engaged with their care,” he said.
GLP-1 drugs aren’t a shortcut; they’re a tool.
How well they work depends on your biology, your habits, and how your treatment is managed over time. Understanding that difference is key to getting real, lasting results.
