Netflix Expected to Add Legendary 1991 Comedy Film
Netflix is preparing to retool its library of movies in May, with some popular titles leaving the platform and others being added.
According to a new report from What's on Netflix, Father of the Bride, the 1991 romcom starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, is Netflix-bound. A date for its debut is not set in stone, but the Charles Shyer-directed film will become available sometime in May.
Father of the Bride II, the 1995 sequel, will also reportedly be added to Netflix next month.
'Father of the Bride': What to know
Released December 20, 19991, Father of the Bride was a remake of the 1950 film of the same name. It starred Martin as George Banks, with Keaton playing his wife Nina and Kimberly Williams making her film debut as Annie, their daughter.
"George Banks is an ordinary, middle-class man whose relatively comfortable life is turned upside down when his beloved daughter announces her engagement, plunging him into a hilariously chaotic whirlwind of over-the-top wedding preparations," writes What's on Netflix's Kasey Banks.
Kieran Culkin plays Matty Banks, George and Nina's son, with George Newbern in the role of Annie's husband Bryan McKenzie. The iconic Martin Short stars as wedding coordinator Franck Eggelhoffer.
Other well-known actors making appearances included BD Wong, Eugene Levy, Peter Michael Goetz and Chauncey Leopardi.
How successful was 'Father of the Bride'?
Given a $20 million budget, the movie grossed $129 million worldwide. It currently holds a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 6.6/10 on IMDB and a 51% mark on Metacritic.
“Father of the Bride” is not as ambitious or as insightful as “Parenthood,” the film it should probably be linked with in Martin’s career. Its truths are more sweet and gentle. But it’s one of the movies with a lot of smiles and laughter in it, and a good feeling all the way through," said legendary film critic Roger Ebert, who added that the film captures "everyday life, warmly observed."
