Beloved Thriller Joins Streaming 20 Years After Sweeping The Oscars
Martin Scorsese's Best Picture-winning thriller The Departed will finally be available to stream at home next month. The film lands on Hulu in the United States on May 1, 2026.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg, The Departed is a cat-and-mouse thriller that follows an undercover police agent working to infiltrate a criminal organization while hunting a dangerous mole in the police force.
The film was a massive commercial success for Scorsese and Warner Bros, pulling in $291 million worldwide against a reported budget of $90 million (via Box Office Mojo). It was a huge success with general audiences, coasting off the star power of DiCaprio and Damon's rising careers.
The Departed was also a hit with critics, who generally considered it to be Scorsese's strongest film in years. The director was emerging from a relatively underwhelming period in his career, with The Aviator and Gangs of New York receiving strong reviews but failing to connect with audiences.
As if this widespread acclaim and critical praise wasn't enough, The Departed also made a splash at the Academy Awards in 2007. The film scored four victories from five nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Shockingly, this was Scorsese's first (and, so far, last) time winning Best Director at the Oscars. While many fans complained that it should have come sooner, The Departed was a worthy project to finally carry Scorsese to that great honor.
While five nominations is nothing to be upset about, The Departed did unfortunately miss some key categories. Mark Wahlberg was the only member of the cast to receive a nomination—DiCaprio, Damon, and Nicholson were all snubbed in their respective lineups. Wahlberg ultimately lost to Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine, marking one of the very rare instances of a movie winning Best Picture without any acting awards.
The Departed will be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. from May 1, 2026. The film is currently unavailable to stream anywhere else in the United States. Those who can't wait to catch Scorsese's beloved thriller at home can rent or buy the film on any major VOD service, such as Amazon Prime or Apple TV.
