Rashid Khan says he declined India, Australia citizenship offers
Rashid Khan said he rejected offers of citizenship from India and Australia, reaffirming his commitment to represent Afghanistan.
The leg-spinner made the claim in his book Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom, in which he describes his rise from Nangarhar to international cricket.
According to his account, both countries approached him with offers to change nationality and represent them at the international level.
“I received such offers from both Australia and India, but I told them I would not play for any country other than Afghanistan,” he said.
Rashid also recalled an interaction during the Indian Premier League 2023 season, where he said a senior Indian official suggested he move and play for India, an offer he declined.
Rashid is widely regarded as one of the leading spin bowlers in world cricket, having represented Afghanistan across all formats and in major global tournaments.
He has also played extensively in franchise leagues, including the IPL, where he represented teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans.
There has been no official confirmation from authorities in India or Australia regarding formal citizenship offers, and such claims remain based on the player’s account.
Analysts note that international eligibility rules in cricket are governed by residency and nationality regulations set by the International Cricket Council.
Afghanistan’s cricket rise has been seen as a major success story, with players like Rashid becoming global stars despite limited domestic infrastructure.
The country’s players often participate in overseas leagues due to fewer opportunities at home, but most have continued to represent Afghanistan internationally.
Rashid’s remarks highlight his emphasis on national loyalty, even as his career has taken him across major cricketing leagues around the world.
