China voices concern over U.S. seizure of Iranian vessel in Hormuz
China expressed concern over the U.S. interception of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, urging all sides to act responsibly and uphold the ceasefire.
Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Monday that the situation in the strait is “sensitive and complex,” calling for restraint.
He said parties involved should avoid further escalation and help restore normal navigation through the vital shipping lane.
The comments follow reports that the United States military fired on and seized an Iranian cargo ship accused of attempting to bypass a naval blockade.
Iran confirmed the vessel had been travelling from China and condemned the action as “armed piracy,” vowing retaliation.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical transit routes, with a significant share of global energy supplies passing through the narrow corridor.
Any disruption in the area can have immediate implications for global markets and regional security. The seizure of the Iranian vessel marked a sharp escalation, with U.S. forces boarding the ship after disabling it in a high-risk maritime operation.
In response, Iranian forces reportedly launched drones toward U.S. naval vessels in nearby waters, raising fears of direct confrontation.
The incident comes amid fragile diplomatic efforts, including talks linked to a temporary ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
China has repeatedly called for dialogue and de-escalation, positioning itself as a supporter of stability in the region.
Meanwhile, Beijing’s comments reflect growing international concern that continued maritime tensions could undermine ceasefire efforts and disrupt global trade routes.
