Aston Villa forward inspired by his teammate for the clinical form in Sunderland win
Aston Villa frontman has been inspired by his fellow striker over his clinical performance in Villa’s victory versus Sunderland at home.
Aston Villa managed to secure another win last night in the Premier League. They were able to come out as winners in a thrilling encounter against Sunderland but had to wait for their winning goal in the last minute. It was the former Chelsea and AS Roma man, Tammy Abraham, who put his name on the score sheet.
The striker who re-joined Villa in the winter transfer window was inspired by Ollie Watkins, whom he substituted in the 80th minute, to be in form last night, when he told Sky Sports, as reported by Express and Star.
“As a striker, watching Ollie today, he was staying alive in the box. When I came on, I told myself to do the same thing. Luckily for me I was in the right place at the right time.”
The Second Spell in Villa Park
For Abraham, Villa Park is not exactly new. The 28-year-old frontman first signed for The Lions as a loanee from Chelsea in the 2018/19 season. He contributed well in his first stint by netting 26 goals and providing three assists in 40 matches, plus helping Villa back to the top flight through the Championship playoffs.
After his spell in the Midlands, he returned to his parent club before switching sides to Italy by joining Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma in the 2021/22 season. He was instrumental in Giallorossi’s continental campaign as they clinched the first edition of the UEFA Conference League and became the finalist in the Europa League 2023.
Sadly, his time in Italy was marred with injuries and inconsistency afterward as he moved to AC Milan on loan in 2024/25. Abraham then went on another loan to Besiktas before sealing a permanent move to Turkey in summer 2025.
However, the London-born forward opted to return to England in the winter transfer window. His second spell in Birmingham has yet been quite satisfactory. He has only been fielded 14 times and registered three goals and one assist. Emery even encouraged him to take the lesson from Ollie Watkins’ form.
Such advice has seemingly stroke him. Tammy Abraham already started to make a crucial contribution. He netted an equaliser while Villa snatched a 1-1 draw against Leeds.
Furthermore, the striker with 11 international caps has been able to display his quality despite coming off the bench. He set up one goal as The Lions crushed Bologna 4-0 at home in the midweek before finding the back of the net in stoppage time while Villa were struggling to restore their lead last weekend.
Thriller on Sunday Afternoon
The match itself was entertaining as well as worrying till the final whistle. Villa took the lead from Ollie Watkins’ header in the second minute. Seven minutes later, The Black Cats equalised through Chris Rigg. In the 36th minute, Watkins completed his brace before setting up another goal early in the second half to give Villa a two-goal cushion.
When things seemed to be in their favour, Jadon Sancho made a blunder leading to their double concession in one minute only from Trai Hume and Wilson Isidor. Sunderland even had a chance to bounce back when Habib Diarra was already dueling one-on-one with Emiliano Martinez. Luckily, the Argentina parried his attempt. Tammy Abraham finally stepped up to make the difference as he found the back of the net following Lucas Digne’s cross.
Aston Villa remains sitting fourth with 58 points. They are only three points ahead of Liverpool in fifth on the current table but still share the same points as Manchester United.
