LUCTONIANS 41 – 34 CAMBORNE
A GAME OF TWO WINS – LUCS THROUGH TO PLAYOFFS WHILST ‘TOWN’ SECURE PROMOTION
Luctonians RFC vs Camborne RFC
Saturday 18th April 2026 – Mortimer Park
Match Report by Geoff Vickress
Camborne managed to gain the bonus points required to give them the Nat 2 West title and promotion to National 1 for the first time. However, they couldn’t beat second place Luctonians who have secured a playoff place themselves by defeating the champions at a noisy Mortimer Park, in front of a vociferous and bouncing home support.
In what was an enthralling match, both sides being without key players due to injury, non availability and suspension, played some exciting rugby, with the home side having the upper hand to beat their visitors 41-34.
Kyle Moyles opened the scoring after 11 minutes when he knocked over a simple penalty, after a Lucs error in front of the posts. But Alex Duckers’ yellow card for the away side, following a high tackle on Lucs centre James Wheeler after 14 minutes. This was as he sped towards the try line, resulting in Lucs being awarded a penalty try and the lead, which they never relinquished.
The home side consolidated their advantage just minutes later, when scrum half Owen Randell latched onto a pass, following excellent work from Lucs Starman Tom Jones and Bryn Goodall; Jones missing the conversion to extend their lead 12-3. And it was only minutes later that the home side saw wing, George Bennett benefit from a delightful dink chip pass from Jones, to increase their lead to 17-3 after 18 minutes, but Jones missed the conversion.
Camborne however showed their mettle, and Jordan Nicholls was driven over on 24minutes; Kyle Moyle converting to reduce arears to 17-10.
The game was end to end at this stage and Lucs’ prolific captain and try scorer Ben Link was next on the scoresheet, when he was at the bottom of a trademark driving maul, to increase the home side’s lead to 22-10, with another conversion attempt missed.
Town’s Duckett however had returned, this after his 10 minutes in the bin and, following good work by flyhalf Rory O’Kane, he dotted down on the half hour to bring the score back to 22-15, with the conversion again missed.
Star man Tom Jones then stole through the Camborne defence with a quick-thinking dart, to increase Lucs’ advantage, but again missed the extras to give the home side 27-1 just before half time. But half time came with Camborne again looking for their much needed bonus point, and crept closer to their goal when Shaun Buzza stretched over, after a quick tap and go penalty in Lucs red zone. Moyles again converted for a 27-22 scoreline as the sides departed for their respective sheds.
Half Time Score
Luctonians RFC 27 – 22 Camborne RFC
The tension was palpable at half time, despite Lucs having secured their try bonus point, and the first 15 minutes of the second half was equally tense, with both sides unable to take advantage of their possession in their respective opponents red zones.
Lucs were awarded a scrum on about 25 metres, after referee Lloyd Davies, who had a fine game allowing the play to flow throughout, was bumped into by Lucs’ Ben Link which disturbed play. From the resulting scrum Lucs’ ever alert scrum half Owen Randell swiftly moved the ball to his flyhalf Jones who put away Rob Aikman to score what was a delightful try after 55minutes, and a lead of 34-22 with Jones converting.
Town supporters were by now wondering if they might ever get the point required to secure the champion spot, but it came shortly after when James Prisk bundled over on the hour, to great celebrations, for the try bonus point required. Moyles converted to keep them within 5 points of the home side, at 34-29.
Despite the celebrations there were still 20 minutes to be played out, and Lucs could ill afford to let the league winners get a result, needing to secure a victory of their own for their playoff push. And it came after 73 minutes when Tom Jones, who was superb with his kicking from hand all game, drove a 50-22 deep into Camborne territory. From the lineout, a swift pass from Randell again saw Jones send the defence the wrong way with a delightful dummy and shimmy to scoot through and score (See title picture). He then converted his own try for a 41-29 lead, with just a few minutes remaining.
Camborne scored the last points, when Adam Hughes managed to squirm over in the dying seconds to leave the final score at 41-34 for the home side, in what was a excellent example rugby at this level by two very evenly matched sides, with the home side again deserved of their victory.
