Aston Villa prepare to sign Premier League winner to replace one star in summer transfer
Aston Villa is likely to get ready to lure a Premier League winner, should Morgan Rogers decide to leave in the next transfer window.
Aston Villa transfer business might include a major sale this summer. Several key men could depart from Villa Park for the sake of both parties. They are prepared for the next big challenge, while The Lions could cash in to comply with the new PSR regulation.
Recently, Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Martinez have been reportedly on the radar of Manchester United and Inter Milan, respectively. The villa seems to have prepared themselves for their replacement.
For the latter, they have been eyeing Manchester City star James Trafford, whereas for the former, Unai Emery’s side is preparing a move for Premier League winner Liverpool’s Curtis Jones. According to the reports in TeamTalk, the Clarets and Blue are one of his current potential suitors at the moment alongside Newcastle United and Spurs.
“Villa are now preparing to make a concrete move for (Curtis) Jones, as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of next season.”
The Unwanted Jones?
The Reds are reportedly considering a major squad revamping next season after this campaign’s disappointment. Their current boss, Arne Slot, could be on his way out. Mo Salah has decided to depart while Curtis Jones and Alexis McAllister have been tipped on the transfer list, especially when the new manager arrives.
Jones is current under contract till summer 2027. There have been talks for an extension, but there has yet to be progress as expected. In fact, it has been reportedly stalled lately. Thus, signing the 25-year-old midfielder could be a good option for Villa as he is entering the final year of his contract.
The product of the Liverpool academy is currently valued at £30.47 million. Such an amount should not be a big deal if they manage to sell Rogers and Martinez at their highest price tag.
Moving to Villa would be an ideal one, as he could be given a key role to fill the void of Morgan Rogers and still compete at the high levels with the prospect of playing in the Champions League in sight.
This season, Jones’ regular minutes have been decreasing, especially with the arrival of Florian Wirtz. He is mainly used as a substitute and not deployed as the number 10. The midfielder with six international caps mainly operates as a central midfielder or defensive midfielder with a total of 43 appearances in all competitions.
So far, he has only registered only two goals and two assists this season. Such a number is less than last season when he was capped 46 times and contributed 3 goals and seven assists in all competitions.
Can he fit Rogers’ role?
The real crucial question would be whether he fits Morgan Rogers’ role should the attacking midfielder leave in the summer. Curtis Jones definitely does have the potential to fill the void.
He is likely more well-suited to the attacking role than the defensive one. His rate for the attacking build-up this season is fairly promising. The Liverpool-born midfielder has 69.6 % successful dribbles, 92.6 % successful passes, 1431 touches with 40 of them inside the opposition boxes, plus 68.4 % accurate long balls.
What Jones needs is only more regular minutes and trust for important role in the team. Emery could certainly develop him to be a better player once he plays under his tutelage. Hopefully, he can do better than Harvey Elliot, who has proven to be one of the setbacks in Aston Villa transfer business last summer.
