Tottenham 2-2 Brighton match report: Xavi Simons stunner not enough as Spurs suffer late blow

Spurs will spend another week in the relegation zone after failing to hold their nerve for just three more minutes, yet this coming of age performance will bring so much hope. Lets have a look at our Tottenham 2-2 Brighton match report

It was the first time since 2009 that Tottenham Hotspur went into a game sitting in the relegation zone and, in what was a must win fixture, they came painfully close to getting the job done.

There was some positive news beforehand as both James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur returned to training. Bentancur was thrown straight back into the starting XI, while Maddison remained on the bench throughout.

First half: Tottenham 1-1 Brighton

With the atmosphere doing its part, Spurs started with real intent, although they were fortunate not to fall behind early on when Micky van de Ven got across Danny Welbeck to deal with Jack Hinshelwood’s header across goal, only to see his clearance hit the post and bounce off his own back without somehow crossing the goal line.

After that scare, Tottenham settled and began to take control, eventually taking a deserved lead when Xavi Simons floated a clever ball into the box and Pedro Porro got there ahead of Bart Verbruggen to head home.

They should have made it two almost immediately. A sharp counter saw Simons’ effort slip past Verbruggen but come back off the post, and when the rebound fell to Porro, the Brighton keeper recovered to keep it out.

That miss proved costly, as Spurs could not take their lead into the break. Kaoru Mitoma, left unmarked at the back post, volleyed Pascal Gross’ cross first time and fired past Antonin Kinsky to make it 1-1.

Second half: Tottenham 2-2 Brighton

Spurs came out again looking dangerous and nearly punished a mistake from Verbruggen, whose clearance ricocheted into Conor Gallagher, but the ball could not guide itself into goal unfortunately.

Joao Palhinha then tested the keeper from distance, before Lucas Bergvall made an immediate impact after coming on, winning the ball high up the pitch and feeding Simons, who cut inside and curled a brilliant effort in off the post from range.

It should have been the winner, but things unravelled late on. Simons was clearly struggling with cramp, and with no substitutions left, Spurs were effectively down to ten men in the closing minutes.

With just three minutes left to see out, Tottenham needed composure, but Kevin Danso faltered under pressure inside his own box, losing possession to Jan Paul van Hecke, who squared it to Georginio Rutter for a simple finish past a helpless Kinsky.

What’s next for Spurs?

This one will hurt. Spurs were seconds away from ending their winless run in 2026, and instead, they are left with another result that keeps them in the bottom three.

Still, there are positives. The performance had far more fight and structure than we have seen in weeks, and if they can play like this in the run-in, they have a real chance of getting out of trouble, as long as they manage games better late on.

Rodrigo Bentancur looked sharp despite his long absence, while Xavi Simons was comfortably the standout and has to start every game from here.

De Zerbi will also feel his approach worked, with both goals coming from pressing high and forcing mistakes.

Next up is a trip to Molineux to face bottom placed Wolves, and quite simply, there is no room for anything but three points.
