Trump says Xi “very happy” with Hormuz reopening ahead of China meeting
Donald Trump said Xi Jinping is “very happy” with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting its importance for global trade and energy flows.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that Xi welcomed the development, as efforts continue to stabilise the vital shipping lane following weeks of regional tensions.
He added that his upcoming visit to China would be “special and possibly historic,” expressing optimism about achieving significant outcomes from talks with Xi.
The comments come as Washington seeks to reassure global markets and key partners, including China, the world’s largest energy importer, about the security of oil and gas shipments through Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that continued U.S. naval pressure could lead to restrictions on access to the strait, raising concerns about potential disruption.
He said transit through Hormuz would be subject to Iran’s rules and designated routes, stressing that the status of the waterway would be determined by “realities on the ground.”
Ghalibaf also accused Washington of misinformation, saying U.S. statements about the situation were misleading and would not influence Iran’s strategic decisions.
Trump has warned that a ceasefire with Iran will not be extended unless a deal is reached by Wednesday, increasing pressure on ongoing negotiations.
He said the United States would maintain its naval blockade of Iranian ports if talks fail, signalling a persistent of economic and military pressure.
The U.S. president also reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains a central objective, with talks focusing on uranium stockpiles and regional security issues.
The Strait of Hormuz carries a significant share of global energy supplies, making stability in the waterway critical for international markets and economic security.
Recent tensions involving Iran, the United States and regional actors, including Israel and Lebanon, have heightened fears of wider disruption.
