BVLGARI Just Broke Another Barrier With This New Release
When BVLGARI unveiled the incredible 1.85mm-thick Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon in 2025, it seemed as though the brand might finally have reached the apex of its decade-long obsession with super-thin watches. After all, how could you top the feat of fitting one of the most challenging complications in watchmaking into a case barely thicker than two credit cards? BVLGARI recently answered that question — and confirmed its commitment to the pursuit of superlative thinness — with the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon Platinum.
The place and time of the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon Platinum’s reveal — the Watches & Wonders Geneva trade show — are no accident. As the biggest annual event in the watch industry, Watches & Wonders Geneva has become the primary duelling ground for the world’s top watch brands in their ongoing game of superlative brinkmanship. Each year, new gauntlets are thrown down: lightest, most complicated, most accurate, most waterproof, thinnest. In the latter category, BVLGARI has an impressive track record, releasing no fewer than 10 record-breaking watches since 2014 while jockeying for position with arch-rival Piaget.
“This creation is not merely a new technical feat, but a true reaffirmation of our ability to innovate by combining the record-breaking thinness of the movement with the nobility and complexity of platinum.”Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of BVLGARI
At 1.85 mm thick, the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon Platinum follows the tradition of forebears like the 2018 Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic (at 3.95 mm, the world’s thinnest automatic tourbillon) and the 2021 Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar (at 5.80 mm, the world’s thinnest perpetual calendar). Limited to just 10 pieces, its 40 mm platinum case contains the BVF 900 flying tourbillon calibre, a hand-wound mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve.
In addition to its skeletonized dial in a unique new blue tone, the watch also showcases a characteristically impressive level of finishing finesse, including a platinum bracelet with contrasting satin-brushed and polished finishes.
“Last year at Watches and Wonders, we pushed the boundaries with the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon. Today, with the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon Platinum, the story continues and reaches a new chapter,” says Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of BVLGARI. “This creation is not merely a new technical feat, but a true reaffirmation of our ability to innovate by combining the record-breaking thinness of the movement with the nobility and complexity of platinum. It embodies the perfect alliance between radical elegance and horological mastery, and sets a new standard in the world of exceptional watches.”
A brand CEO’s bias aside, in light of BVLGARI’s record-breaking precedents, it’s easy to forget just how improbable a creation the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon Platinum is. Because of the complexity of a tourbillon — a mechanism that continuously rotates a watch’s escapement and balance wheel to counteract the effect of gravity — watches that feature them tend to be at least 10 mm thick, usually more. In any other context, an impressively thin production tourbillon would be 7 or 8 mm thick. Given that the complexity and difficulty of miniaturization increase by orders of magnitude the thinner it gets, the very existence of a watch like this is nothing short of miraculous. At BVLGARI, however, it’s becoming an annual tradition.
