Jordan Peele-Produced Sports Horror Touches Down on Netflix
Fresh from theaters, Him, the supernatural horror film from Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Studios, will find a new home on Netflix.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker, known for directing Get Out (2017), Us (2019), and Nope (2022), as well as the producer of BlacKkKlansman (2018) and Candyman (2021), brings to life a new, sports-centered scare-fest, set in the world of American football.
Per its official logline, Him chronicles "former college wide-receiver Cameron Cade, a rising-star quarterback who has devoted his life, and identity, to football. On the eve of professional football's annual scouting Combine, Cam is attacked by an unhinged fan and suffers a potentially career-ending brain trauma."
Tyriq Withers (Atlanta, I Know What You Did Last Summer) plays the lead role in the film, supported by Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie, White Chicks), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems, No Sudden Move), and Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric, Us), and Jim Jeffries (Legit, The Jim Jeffries Show).
"Just when all seems lost, Cam receives a lifeline when his hero, Isaiah White (Wayans), a legendary eight-time Championship quarterback and cultural megastar, offers to train Cam at Isaiah's isolated compound that he shares with his celebrity influencer wife, Elsie White (Fox)," the description adds. "But as Cam's training accelerates, Isaiah's charisma begins to curdle into something darker, sending his protégé down a disorienting rabbit hole that may cost him more than he ever bargained for."
Him received mixed to negative reviews from critics, but received generally more favorable reviews from moviegoers. Regardless of where you sit on the divide, the sociological sports horror offers plenty of scares, as well as a winning performance from rising star Tyriq Withers. Who knows — perhaps the film's mild box office performance will benefit from the Netflix bump and find a new, dedicated following, despite its disappointments, like a real sportsman.
Him arrives on Netflix U.S. on April 19.
