A live-action FernGully movie is in the works!
The animated movie FernGully: The Last Rainforest was released in 1992 and while it wasn’t a huge hit at the box office, it has become a cult classic over the years.
Deadline reports that Marielle Heller is writing the live-action adaptation and she’ll also direct her own script. The original movie takes place “in an Australian rainforest populated by fairies, one of whom accidentally shrinks a logger to fairy size. They band together to protect the rainforest from the logging business and an evil pollution entity named Hexxus.”
The animated movie featured the voices of Robin Williams, Christian Slater, Tim Curry, and Samantha Mathis.
Amazon MGM Studios is working on the live-action adaptation.
Marielle has previously directed 2015′s The Diary of a Teenage Girl starring Bel Powley, 2018′s Can You Ever Forgive Me? starring Melissa McCarthy in an Oscar-nominated performance, 2019′s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks in an Oscar-nominated performance, and 2024′s Nightbitch starring Amy Adams in a Golden Globe-nominated performance.
