Will Christopher Meloni Return as Stabler on ‘Law & Order’? Actor Breaks His Silence
On Thursday, NBC shared the unfortunate news that the Law & Order spin-off series Law & Order: Organized Crime had been cancelled after five seasons. The single-arc show, focused on more complex storylines rather than the case-per-episode style of the original, was led by Christopher Meloni, who debuted on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999. The actor plays Detective Elliot Stabler, a fan favorite character, in the franchise.
Stabler hasn't been a main character on SVU since 2011, when he departed the series. With Organized Crime now over, could Meloni make a return to the series that brought Stabler to life? Here's what the star had to say about his character.
Christopher Meloni Reflects on Playing Stabler in a New Instagram Post
Following the news of Organized Crime's cancellation, Meloni took to Instagram to thank fans for their support, while reacting to the news he was also recently informed of. “I just saw that they announced Organized Crime won’t be coming back," he said in a video post.
The actor then reflected on his long career playing the beloved character. "I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to the fans who not only helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity, but for sticking with him and welcoming him back."
The next part, however, seems to hint that Organized Crime may be the final chapter for Stabler. "It was a good ride,” Meloni said, using past tense. “I had a great time playing him. It was a great ride. Thank you. You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of, nearly 17-odd years.”
Heartbroken fans shouldn't despair too much just yet — Meloni was a main character on SVU from its debut in 1999 before departing in 2011, but he returned to the franchise in 2021, so there's every chance that could happen again.
