Carrick: We’ve faced lots of disappointing decisions
Manchester United have been on the wrong end of too many dreadful decisions this season, especially in recent weeks. Against Bournemouth a stonewall penalty wasn’t awarded to Amad Diallo, only for Bournemouth to take the ball up to the other end and score. Later in the game, Harry Maguire was guilty of a similar decision but a penalty was awarded and he was shown a red card. We learnt yesterday, 26 days after the incident, that Maguire had been given a further ban for his reaction to the unequal decision making, which means he will be missing for Saturday’s game against Chelsea.
In our next game, Leeds United took the lead at Old Trafford after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was seen elbowing Leny Yoro in the head. The foul wasn’t checked and the goal stood. Then, Lisandro Martinez was shown a red card for pulling Calvert-Lewin’s head, despite the striker hitting the defender in the face at the time. This means we will be without both Maguire and Martinez for our visit to Stamford Bridge, on top of the long-term injury to Matthijs de Ligt, meaning we are without any real experience in the centre of our defence.
There have been suggestions since that Leny Yoro has also picked up an injury and was not on the train down to London as a result.
After the game, Michael Carrick voiced his frustrations to the media and in the press conference ahead of the Chelsea game he’s still understandably frustrated.
To be honest, there’s not much we can react to. Massively disappointed, of course. I think quite a few reasons to be disappointed in a big way over those types of situations over the last three weeks, but obviously now we’ve got to move on, the decisions have been made, it’s something that we’re really disappointed with in many ways, but that’s it now. We’ve got to move on and we will do.
I think it was pretty obvious how I felt after the game and I still feel that way, so yeh, listen, I don’t want to go into it now. I think it is what it is. We’ve been hit with some decisions, and at the end of the day, now we’ve just got to accept it and move on, whether we like them or not.
Ayden Heaven is therefore our only available centre-half but Carrick says the youngster is doing well.
I think Ayden’s in a good place, well I know he’s in a good place. He’s obviously still young and he’s progressing through the early stage of his career really. So, I think it’s pretty natural for him to play some games and maybe not some others. He’s training really well, he’s learning, he’s listening, he wants to improve, so I think it’s pretty natural for a centre-half of his age, he’s probably well ahead of schedule in terms of the games that he’s played. So yeh, he’s trained well, I’ve got no worries. He went away and played with England a couple of weeks ago and done well, so yeh, looking forward to the game for sure.
