Pakistan PM welcomes Israel-Lebanon ceasefire, backs diplomatic efforts
Shehbaz Sharif said he welcomed the 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, calling it a positive step toward reducing tensions in the region.
Writing on X on April 17, Sharif said the truce was the result of “bold and wise” diplomatic efforts and expressed hope it would lead to a lasting peace.
He also acknowledged the role of Donald Trump in facilitating the ceasefire, highlighting ongoing international mediation efforts.
Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that Islamabad would continue backing initiatives aimed at regional stability.
The ceasefire, agreed by Israel and Lebanon, is intended to halt hostilities and create space for negotiations on a broader and more durable security arrangement.
The truce follows weeks of escalating cross-border clashes involving Israeli forces and Hezbollah, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
Diplomatic efforts led by the United States and other international actors have intensified to prevent further escalation and stabilize the situation.
Antonio Guterres also welcomed the ceasefire, urging both sides to fully implement the agreement and use the opportunity to advance peace talks.
The United Nations has repeatedly called for restraint and dialogue amid concerns that continued violence could destabilize the broader Middle East.
Sharif’s remarks reflect broader international support for the ceasefire, as global leaders push for sustained diplomacy to turn the temporary truce into a lasting peace agreement.
