Ornstein confirms 44yo is now clear favourite to take over as Man United manager
Manchester United are approaching a defining moment as they prepare to make a crucial decision ahead of the summer transfer window.
The managerial hot seat at Old Trafford remains vacant following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January.
Michael Carrick has stepped in as interim manager and has quickly emerged as a leading contender after an impressive start.
United have secured seven wins in 11 matches, propelling themselves into third place in the Premier League.
Reputed journalist David Ornstein dropped a bombshell update, confirming that Carrick is in a strong position to get the full-time managerial job.
He said (via The Athletic): “I hear United have completed all of their background work and no doubt spoken to representatives, although I’m told no interviews with candidates have taken place yet.
“It’s a huge call for United and their sporting director Jason Wilcox — he’s leading the process and will make a recommendation to the board. As things stand, it might feel like Carrick is in pole position.”
Michael Carrick needs positive results
Despite the early optimism, recent results have slightly cooled the excitement, with the Red Devils losing two of their last four matches.
The 44-year-old had initially electrified supporters by guiding United to back-to-back statement victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.
United delivered one of their best performances to beat Man City.
INEOS have a big call to make as they have already made mistakes by keeping Erik ten Hag and then appointing Ruben Amorim.
High-profile names such as Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti and Julian Nagelsmann have been linked with the role.
However, Tuchel has signed an extension with England. Ancelotti is also expected to extend his future with Brazil after the World Cup this summer.
Nagelsmann also appears fully focused on his project with Germany.
Carrick is in a dream position but he must guide United to a top-five finish to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League.
However, if he truly wants to make the role his own, delivering a third-place finish could be the ultimate statement.
