‘Buffy’ Sequel Series Returns After Recent Reboot Cancellation
It looks like the end of the road is nowhere in sight for the Buffy franchise.
Less than a month after Hulu cancelled the planned sequel series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New to Sunnydale, Dynamite Entertainment has formally announced a follow-up series that continues the titular Vampire Slayer's adventures beyond the original series finale in 2003 — this time in comic form. The new series, launching on July 27, was previously announced at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con and will be penned by Kelly Thompson and Stephen Byrne.
“Buffy Summers is, in my opinion, one of the best modern heroes of science-fiction/fantasy,” Thompson said in a press release, via AIPT Comics. “The show was wildly inspirational for a young Kelly, and like so many things that feel very lucky in my life, I’m not sure I’m a writer today without encountering Buffy at the right moment."
Another familiar face will be joining Buffy — Angel, the morally grey vampire whose popularity warranted its own spin-off show from 1999 to 2003, is a major player in the new series.
The new comic, per its official logline, "drops readers into a key moment in her timeline, pulling together characters from both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel for a large-scale story that leans into high emotion, new dangers, and a fresh villain entering the mix."
"This idea for Buffy has been sitting with me for a long time – and so when the chance to grab both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel came along," Thompson added. "I couldn’t resist trying it. I hope you guys will enjoy the ride — it comes from a place of deep love for the franchise – and I’ll try my best to be worthy of it.”
Buffy and Angel were portrayed in live action by Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, respectively. For fans still in mourning over the scrapped Hulu TV series, tapped to have Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao at the helm, not all is lost. According to industry reports about the rejected pilot, the network has apparently benched the series temporarily, with plans to rework the material for the sequel. Back in March, Deadline stated Hulu “remains high on the Buffy IP and plans to regroup and mull a possible new incarnation of the beloved franchise.”
