Iconic Rock Band Performed Their First-Ever US Concert on This Day in 1974
British rock band Queen is embedded in the DNA of pop culture, with a fan base spanning generations across the globe. They're not just universally beloved, either – in 2002, the group's undisputedly biggest song, "Bohemian Rhapsody," was dubbed "the UK's favourite hit of all time" per a poll in the Guinness World Records British Hit Singles Book.
Forming in 1970, Queen spent their early years performing solely in their home country. In 1973, they released their self-titled debut. "Keep Yourself Alive," the first track from said debut, failed to chart as a single the week before the album dropped. The band followed that with their sophomore effort on Mar. 8, 1974, titled Queen II.
Shortly after this, Queen decided to venture across the pond to the US for the first time to promote their second record. On this day in 1974, the band played their first-ever concert in America in Denver, Colorado, at Regis College Field House in Regis University (then known as Regis College). They weren't even the headline act for their North America Tour, which spanned four weeks. In fact, they opened for Mott the Hoople, a rock band hailing from Hereford, Hertfordshire.
At the time, Queen decided to pay more attention to their on-stage looks, bringing on fashion designer Dame Zandra Lindsey Rhodes to create their costumes. This includes frontman Freddie Mercury and guitarist Brian May's iconic wingsuits.
A piece on the Regis University site about the band's performance at the College Field House notes that, in 1974, Mercury "wouldn't yet have perfected that preening, powerful presence that would elevate him to icon status." However, he certainly wowed the audience that night with his four-octave range.
The US tour culminated in a four-night stay in New York City. Unfortunately, the stint was cut short after the May 11 show when Brian May contracted hepatitis and collapsed. The group flew back to the UK so he could recover.
Despite the abrupt conclusion, it's abundantly clear that Queen's first-ever US performance and ensuing tour laid the groundwork for establishing the band as the legendary musical act it is today.
