I managed Tottenham for 18 months and even I don’t know the solution: Andre Villas-Boas

Former Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas believes that there is one main reason behind the Lilywhites’ current struggles to stay in the Premier League.

A couple of generations of Tottenham fans are now experiencing something that they have never experienced before: seeing their club desperately fight to avoid relegation.

The Lilywhites last went down from the top-flight nearly 50 years ago, and if they do get relegated this season, it will undoubtedly be one of the biggest stories of the Premier League era.

Opta’s Supercomputer now considers Tottenham the favourites to go down, and if that does come to pass, a former Spurs boss is clear on who should take the blame.

Andre Villas-Boas claims managerial merry-go-round is the reason for Tottenham’s woes

Villas-Boas believes that the responsibility for Spurs’ struggles lies with the decision-makers at the top of the club.

The former Spurs head coach suggested that Tottenham have simply changed managers too frequently and have alternated between completely different styles of play too often.

When asked about the North London club’s current predicament, the 48-year-old said (The Sun): “It’s a real shock. You saw the evolution over the infrastructure at Tottenham, from the training ground to the stadium, becoming a major brand.

“Probably, eight managers in five years doesn’t help because all of them are very, very different to one another. Different methods, different ways of selecting players. So, this leads to instability as well. They’ve changed managers, the leading structures, and also sports directors.

“So, in eight years, you’ve had totally different methods, totally different ways of thinking, totally different ways of implementing philosophies. And probably that has led to the instability right now, which adds to the pressure of being in the relegation zone, and that pressure is second to none.”

Villas-Boas on what he expects to happen if Spurs go down

Roberto De Zerbi remains confident about Tottenham’s survival chances, with the Italian suggesting that all his side need is to get one win to turn around the players’ mindset.

Villas-Boas believes the Lilywhites may be well placed to bounce straight back up with the Italian if they do go down.

The Portuguese coach added about Tottenham’s current predicament: “They’re really in a difficult place. I can’t say what the best solution for them is. De Zerbi has to deliver results.

“It’s a long-term contract anyway. If they go down, they can be back up because they have the infrastructure, quality of players and the resources to do it.”
