Woman, 91, feared ‘unresponsive’ was just holed-up playing video games in her bedroom

Police officers called out for a welfare check on a 91-year-old woman made a discovery they’ll never forget.

The elderly woman in Westlake, Ohio, was signed up to the city’s Are You Okay? programme, which allows residents to sign up for daily phone calls to make sure they are safe and healthy.

But officers became worried when their calls went unanswered last Thursday. Even her daughter failed to get hold of her.

‘Everyone’s a little bit alarmed that she’s missing these contacts,’ Westlake Police Captain Jerry Vogel recalled.

Officers were then dispatched to the woman’s home, but there was again no answer when they knocked at her front door.

They managed to gain entry using the code to open her garage and would have no doubt started fearing the worst on seeing her car parked inside.

Body camera footage captured the officers making their way through the house, with the eerie silence only punctuated by their call of ‘Westlake Police’.

The tension quickly melted away into hilarity, however, when they finally discover the elderly resident, News 5 Cleveland reports.

‘We’re here with her,’ an officer announces. ‘She’s playing video games in her bedroom.’

Police confirmed she was safe, and revealed she had not responded to anybody’s calls because she was busy trying to beat her top score.

Captain Vogel added she was very grateful for everyone’s concern, though.

‘It’s a great reminder that Westlake residents have that service for them and they can sign up any time they want,’ he said.
