Fabrizio Romano reveals how Tottenham and Cristian Romero are each feeling about summer transfer
Fabrizio Romano has revealed what his sources have told him about the likelihood of Cristian Romero departing Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
It has now dawned on Tottenham fans that Romero may have played his final game for Spurs after his latest knee injury ruled him out of the rest of the season.
The Tottenham captain continues to be linked with the biggest clubs in the world ahead of the summer window, and everything points to a parting of ways between the North London club and the centre-back.
In fact, several sources have said that Spurs are ready to cash in on Romero even if they stay in the Premier League.
Fabrizio Romano reveals Cristian Romero’s camp expect Tottenham exit this summer
Romano has now weighed in on the ongoing speculation over the World Cup winner’s future as the Lilywhites desperately try to stay in the Premier League.
He explained that both the centre-back’s camp and Tottenham expect a summer exit, but pointed out that a deal may not be straightforward to complete.
When asked about the 27-year-old’s future, Romano said on GiveMeSport’s Market Madness podcast: “What I can tell you is that there is a feeling around all people involved in this story, on player’s side, and then on club side, it is probably going to be time for Cuti Romero to leave in the summer transfer window.
“We know it’s always difficult to negotiate with Tottenham, especially when it’s about top players. They are tough and so obviously, let’s see who is prepared to pay what Tottenham want.”
Romano reveals if Romero has a release clause in his Spurs contract
Reports over recent weeks have indicated that the Spurs defender has a release clause in his Spurs contract, which can be activated by three clubs this summer: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
This was also confirmed by the centre-back’s father, who revealed last week that Romero has a release clause of around $50-$70m (£37.8m-£53m).
However, Romano has now denied the existence of such a clause, revealing that the defender only has a gentleman’s agreement with the North Londoners regarding a summer exit.
He added: “From what I understand, there is no release clause, in paper, in the contract of Cuti Romero. It was just a gentleman’s agreement, but with the previous chairman, Daniel Levy, but now there is no release clause to be activated.
“The price is up to Tottenham. It’s Tottenham deciding, so we have to see how the negotiations will be. There is interest from Europe, and also from abroad. For sure, there is a lot of interest in Romero, and the expectation of those around player and club is that something will happen in the summer. But again, it depends on the price.”
