These Six House Republicans Bucked Trump, Joined the Dems to Advance Measure to Restore ‘Protected Status’ For Thousands of Haitians

Six House Republicans on Wednesday voted with the Democrats to extend ‘Temporary Protected Status’ for thousands of Haitians living in the US for three years.

The measure was introduced by radical Democrat Rep. Ayanna Pressley.

“Extending TPS for Haiti is not only the moral and humanitarian thing to do—it’s also good policy. It’s good for families, it’s good for our economy, and it’s good for America,” Pressley said ahead of the vote. “Today the People’s House has an opportunity to pass our legislation to extend Haiti TPS and save lives. And we must do just that.”

Rep. Kevin Kiley who just flipped from a Republican to an Independent, also voted with the Democrats.

The vote to advance the measure was 219-209.

There will be a final vote in the House on Thursday. Even if the measure passes the House, it is likely dead on arrival in the Senate.

Here are the six Republicans who voted with the Democrats to buck Trump:

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE)
Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL)
Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL)
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA)
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY)
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY)

Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-CA), an independent who caucuses with Republicans, also voted with the Democrats.

Politico reported:

The House advanced legislation Wednesday that would restore legal status to thousands of Haitian immigrants in the United States, after a few Republicans crossed the aisle to sign onto a discharge petition that forced a floor vote on the bill.

A handful of Republicans joined all Democrats in voting for the bill from Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), who used the discharge petition maneuver to compel a vote on the legislation — the latest instance where Republicans have broken rank to support a procedural gambit typically deployed exclusively by members of the minority party.

Pressley’s measure would reinstate temporary protected status for Haitian migrants who came to the United States amid decades of upheavals and natural disasters in the beleaguered Caribbean country. While this designation does not afford a path to citizenship for Haitian migrants, it does allow migrants to live and work in the United States.

Far-left Democrat Representatives earlier Wednesday joined Ayanna Pressley and demanded the House pass the measure to extend the TPS status for the Haitians.

“Haiti is overrun by criminal gangs, who kidnap women and girls, extort residents for protection money, and kill with impunity. We must preserve their TPS and protect their lives and safety,” said Wasserman Schultz.

“As a descendent of immigrants who fled repression and antisemitism, I’ll always fight for law-abiding immigrant families who fled desperate circumstances and who work hard, pay taxes, pass criminal background checks, and contribute to our economy and communities,” Wasserman-Schultz added.

“Extending TPS for Haiti is urgent and necessary,” said Maxwell Frost.

“I’ve been fighting to protect Haitian families in Central Florida because Haiti is facing a devastating humanitarian crisis marked by violence, instability, and a lack of basic safety. The House must act to protect these families, and the Senate must follow with the same urgency,” Frost added.

“For Haitian nationals, these deportation threats are not policy. They are a death sentence,” said Rep. Frederica Wilson (FL-24). “My constituents have done everything right, and I refuse to stand by while they are sent back into violence, instability, and fear. Haiti is not safe, and we all know it. This is a humanitarian crisis, and I am demanding immediate action to extend TPS, protect these families, and stand with Haiti. I will keep fighting with everything I have until these families are protected and this injustice is brought to an end.”

The Supreme Court this month will hear oral arguments on the Trump Administration’s decision to end TPS for hundreds of thousand of Haitians and Syrians.
