World Cup 2026: Australia bidding to make a splash at the FIFA showpiece
Australia will head into the 2026 World Cup this summer bidding to at least emulate their best ever results at the FIFA showpiece.
They reached the round of 16 in 2006 and 2022, and were arguably unfortunate not to make further progress after being paired with the eventual winners on each occasion.
Australia are rated as 6/4 shots to make it through to the knockout phase after being drawn alongside Turkey, United States and Paraguay in Group D.
Read on as we look at how Australia qualified for the World Cup, before assessing their chances of making an impact at this summer’s tournament.

World Cup 2026: Australia face a tough task this summer
Australia’s Group D fixtures are as follows:
- Sun, Jun 14, 2026 – Australia vs Turkey
- Fri, Jun 19, 2026 – United States vs Australia
- Fri, Jun 26, 2026 – Paraguay vs Australia
Based on FIFA’s world rankings (April 15, 2026), Australia have more than a fighting chance of making it through to the round of 32 this summer.
As global interest in the tournament continues to grow, fans are finding new ways to engage with the action beyond just watching matches. In markets such as Australia, the rise of digital platforms has been notable, with options like casino online real money Australia gaining traction among users seeking interactive entertainment during major sporting events. While football remains the main attraction, this broader digital ecosystem reflects how audiences are increasingly combining sports viewing with other online experiences.
The Aussies are ranked 27th in the world, 11 places behind the US and five adrift of Turkey. Paraguay are currently 40th in the standings.
However, they have nothing to fear from the US, who are still struggling to cement a tactical identity under former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Turkey are arguably the strongest team in the group, with top talents such as Hakan Calhanoglu, Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz well respected in European football.
Paraguay recorded impressive victories over Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay during qualification to demonstrate that they could be a threat in this group.
While Australia’s route to the knockout stage will not be easy, they are perfectly capable of making life extremely difficult for their opponents this summer.
Manager Tony Popovic has done an excellent job since replacing Graham Arnold, building a squad with a clear identity in which everyone knows their jobs.
Australia took four points off Japan during qualifying, which is an impressive return when considering they recently defeated England in a friendly.
Nestory Irankunda is Australia’s most dangerous attacking weapon, and his pace on the counter-attack could be useful in tight games.
Australia will need their wing-backs to shine if they are to progress from the group, with Popovic’s system heavily reliant on the thrust they provide down the flanks.
Reaching the round of 16 should be the minimum requirement for a squad which has the ability to upset the odds against more fancied teams this summer.
