Tottenham receive James Trafford reality check: £40m deal could quickly become a pipe dream for Spurs
Pete O’Rourke has given Tottenham Hotspur a reality check amidst reports suggesting that they are making progress in their efforts to land James Trafford.
Guglielmo Vicario is expected to return to Serie A this summer, and one English goalkeeper has been mooted as a potential replacement for the Italian over the last few weeks.
A number of outlets have suggested that Tottenham have identified Trafford as their next number one, with the England international thought to be keen to leave the Etihad Stadium in search of game time.
It has been claimed that City are ready to cash in on their number two, just 12 months after they paid £31m to re-sign the goalkeeper from Burnley.
Tottenham warned relegation would end their pursuit of James Trafford
It was claimed a couple of days ago by TEAMtalk that Trafford is willing to swap City for Tottenham if Spurs guarantee him the number one role.
In fact, the outlet claimed that the goalkeeper may be willing to sign for the Lilywhites even if they get relegated.
However, Pete O’Rourke has dismissed that claim, insisting that there will be no shortage of Premier League clubs interested in the Englishman.
When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of Trafford, the journalist told Football Insider: “It’s going to be highly unlikely they could sign James Trafford if they do suffer relegation. Trafford wants to be playing at the highest level possible. Obviously, that’s why he returned to Manchester City in the summer.
“Trafford’s been frustrated by his situation at the club, only sort of cup games for him. He knows he needs to be playing if he wants to become a mainstay in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. If Tottenham stay up, we know they probably will be in the market for a goalkeeper and then there might be an option for a move for Trafford as well.
“But I think obviously if they were to go down, it would be almost impossible that they could get a deal done for Trafford. Plus, there’ll be a lot of interest in Trafford from other clubs in the Premier League as well.”
Spurs’ competitors for Trafford and his asking price revealed
Spurs Web has relayed a number of reports over recent weeks suggesting that Newcastle are ready to battle Tottenham for Trafford this summer, having missed out on a deal to land him from Burnley last summer.
Meanwhile, some sources believe that Aston Villa could also challenge Spurs for the Man City star’s signature if they cash in on Emi Martinez this summer.
According to an update from The Daily Mail last week, Tottenham would have to pay around £35m-£40m to prise Trafford away from the Etihad Stadium.
