Xi urges stronger China-Russia ties, calls for mutual support
Xi Jinping said China and Russia should deepen mutual trust and support each other’s core interests during talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The meeting, held in Beijing on April 15, focused on strengthening bilateral ties, expanding strategic coordination, and reinforcing cooperation amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
Xi emphasized that China remains committed to its partnership with Russia, even as Beijing expands diplomatic and economic engagement with other countries and regions across Europe and Asia.
The talks come as several Western leaders, including those from Spain, the United Kingdom, and Canada, have visited China this year seeking to stabilize and improve relations with the world’s second-largest economy.
Both sides are expected to maintain high-level exchanges, with a potential summit between Vladimir Putin and Xi later this year to reaffirm their strategic partnership.
China and Russia have strengthened ties in recent years through increased trade, energy cooperation, and coordinated positions on key international issues, often presenting a united front in global forums.
Beijing has also promoted the idea of a multipolar world order, advocating for greater balance in global power structures and increased roles for emerging economies in international decision-making.
Xi’s remarks underline China’s intent to sustain close relations with Russia while navigating broader global engagement, reflecting a dual-track strategy in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
