Italy suspends defence pact with Israel amid Lebanon tensions
Giorgia Meloni said Italy has decided to suspend its defence cooperation agreement with Israel, citing current regional conditions and security concerns.
According to Reuters, Meloni announced the decision during a visit to Verona, stating that the government would halt the automatic renewal of the defence pact under present circumstances.
A source familiar with the matter said the decision was taken a day earlier during consultations involving Meloni, her deputy, and senior defence and foreign affairs officials.
Italy, previously considered one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe, has in recent weeks voiced criticism over Israeli military actions in Lebanon, where civilian casualties have drawn international concern.
Tensions further escalated after Israeli forces reportedly fired near Italian troops serving under a United Nations mission in Lebanon, damaging a vehicle but causing no reported injuries.
Italy’s shift comes amid growing political pressure at home, with opposition groups urging the government to reassess its defence ties with Israel in light of the ongoing conflict.
The Israeli foreign ministry has not commented on the suspension, as diplomatic strains deepen between Israel and some European partners over the conflict’s humanitarian impact.
The suspension of the defence pact signals a more cautious approach by Italy, reflecting broader European concerns and increasing scrutiny of military cooperation amid escalating regional tensions.
