Silas Demary Jr. to return for UConn
By ADAM ZAGORIA
In a move that is huge for maintaining stability and continuity at UConn, junior point guard Silas Demary Jr. announced that he will return for his senior season.
“Let’s run it back,” he posted on Instagram.
After transferring from Georgia, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 10.1 points, 5.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds for the NCAA runner-up Huskies. He led UConn in steals (62) and assists (229), and his 6.0 assists per game led the Big East.
After missing UConn’s first-round NCAA Tournament game vs. Furman with an ankle sprain, Demary persevered and helped them reach the championship game against Michigan.
With Malachi Smith out of eligibility, Dan Hurley’s squad will likely need to add another point guard.
The Huskies lost big men Tarris Reed Jr. (graduation) and Eric Reibe (transfer portal) and are awaiting word on freshman star Braylon Mullins, who could declare for the NBA Draft, as well as Solo Ball and Jaylin Stewart.
“I’m actually embracing the fact that the players have to go through a process of re-committing to wanting to be in your program,” Hurley told reporters Tuesday. “Obviously there’s a business component to it, too. But I like the fact that players now have to, on a yearly basis, decide whether they want to be a Husky. I’m embracing that right now. That’s what I’m telling myself.”
UConn brings in 6-foot-6 forward Colben Landrew from Georgia and 6-4 shooting guard Junior County from Utah.
They also hosted 6-10 Seton Hall transfer Najai Hines on Tuesday.
“I think we are going to be busy,” Hurley said. “We have been busy. A lot of what we are trying to do is internally find out who wants to be here. Then once we have a sense of who wants to be here vs. our vision of what being here would be like for them in terms of their role … beyond the center part, it is trickier. Some of who we bring in is going to be based on decisions those people make whether it is NBA, test (the waters of the NBA) or transfer portal.”
