Rights advocates urge Melania Trump to spotlight women’s plight in Afghanistan
More than 100 Afghan human rights advocates and women’s rights defenders have issued an open letter to Melania Trump, urging her to use her influence to support women and girls in Afghanistan.
Addressed to the First Lady, the letter highlights that its message is partly inspired by her past efforts to spotlight children affected by conflict, expressing hope her voice can refocus global attention on vulnerable Afghans.
The signatories say Afghan girls who once aspired to become doctors, teachers, and journalists are now deprived of education, while mothers struggle with rising malnutrition and worsening living conditions.
They add that women across much of Afghanistan have been largely excluded from public life, with children; especially girls facing a future increasingly constrained by systemic restrictions and limited opportunities.
Referring to Melania Trump’s previous remarks at the United Nations Security Council, the activists stressed that her platform transcends politics and can draw global attention to overlooked humanitarian crises.
Since the return of the Taliban to power in 2021, restrictions on women’s education, employment, and mobility have intensified, drawing widespread international condemnation and concern from rights organizations.
Global humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned of worsening economic conditions in Afghanistan, with millions facing food insecurity, limited healthcare access, and shrinking international aid amid competing global crises.
The activists emphasized that even small actions—such as public advocacy, supporting education initiatives, and engaging with aid groups—can make a significant difference in ensuring Afghan women and children are not forgotten.
