Europe Advances Plan To Reduce Reliance On U.S. Within NATO
The Wall Street Journal reported that European countries are accelerating efforts to safeguard their defence capabilities amid concerns over a potential reduction of the United States role in NATO.
The report said European officials are working on a plan often described as a “European NATO,” aimed at strengthening regional leadership roles and gradually replacing reliance on U.S. military assets and command structures.
According to the report, the initiative began taking shape last year but has gained urgency following statements and policies by Donald Trump, including criticism of allies and security-related tensions during the Iran conflict.
Germany is said to be playing a central role in advancing the plan, helping move discussions from strategic concepts toward practical implementation within European defence frameworks.
European leaders aim to maintain U.S. participation in NATO while gradually shifting more defence responsibilities and operational control to European member states over time.
NATO has long depended on U.S. military leadership, intelligence capabilities, and funding, with Washington contributing a significant share of the alliance’s overall defence resources since its founding in 1949.
Recent geopolitical tensions, including conflicts in the Middle East and shifting U.S. foreign policy priorities, have prompted European nations to reconsider their strategic autonomy and long-term security planning.
As uncertainty over future U.S. commitments persists, Europe’s push for greater defence independence reflects a broader effort to ensure stability while redefining transatlantic security responsibilities.
