What’s open and closed during the Montreal blue-collar strike
Montreal’s blue-collar workers will begin a three-day strike Wednesday morning, resulting in a partial shutdown of city services.
More than 6,000 workers represented by CUPE Local 301 plan to walk out from 6 a.m. Wednesday until Saturday at 6 a.m.
The strike will impact waste collection and street cleaning, as well as the opening hours of some pools and libraries.
Here’s a list of what’s open and closed during the three-day strike, by borough:
All boroughs
- Essential services will be maintained: road repairs (major potholes and subsidence), emergency operations related to water mains and sewers, etc.
- Parking restrictions related to street cleaning are suspended. All other parking regulations remain in effect, including metered spaces, on-street parking areas reserved for residents, time-limited zones, reserved lanes, spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility and secure areas (e.g., fire hydrants).
Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie
- Collection of green waste and bulky items is cancelled.
- Household waste collection scheduled for Thursday is cancelled in certain areas only. See montreal.ca for details.
- Some libraries, pools, and community centres are closed.
St-Laurent
- Garbage, recycling and organic waste collection will be maintained.
- Some public buildings are closed or have modified schedules, including park chalets and arenas.
Lachine
- Arena Pierre “Pete” Morin will be closed. All other municipal buildings will remain open.
- Waste collection and essential services will be maintained.
Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce
- Compost, bulky waste and green waste collection is cancelled.
- Libraries, cultural centres, and administrative service offices are open.
L’Île-Bizard—Ste-Geneviève
- Waste collection services are maintained as they are provided by external contractors.
- The town hall and the municipal depot site will be closed.

Anjou
- Waste collection will continue as scheduled.
- Park chalets and the permit counter are closed.
Montréal-Nord
- Waste collection will continue.
- Some pools and arenas are closed.
LaSalle
- Some arenas and sports centres will be closed, while other facilities and aquatic centres will be open. See the city website for details.
- All collections will take place as usual.
Mercier—Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
- In certain areas, household waste collection scheduled for Thursday has been postponed to Saturday during the daytime. The city instructs residents to put waste out between 7 p.m. the evening before and 7 a.m. on the day of collection. All other collections will proceed as usual. - Certain pools and arenas will be closed.
Sud-Ouest
- Waste collection in certain areas is rescheduled. The city asks residents to keep waste on their property until the next collection day during the week of April 20. See the city map for details.
- Several pools, arenas and park chalets are closed.
- Certain cultural centres and libraries are scheduled to stay open.
Ahuntsic-Cartierville
- Recycling collection is cancelled. All other waste collection is maintained.
- Certain arenas, pools, and park chalets are closed.
Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles
- Collection of food waste, household waste, and bulky items and construction waste are cancelled.
- Some arenas and aquatic centres are closed.
Outremont
- Certain arenas and pools are closed.
