£19m Man Utd forward risks becoming next Antony despite blind trust from Carrick
Manchester United lost to Leeds United for the first time at Old Trafford in Premier League history.
Leeds got off to a perfect start on Monday evening, with Noah Okafor scoring twice in the first half-hour.
Lisandro Martinez was sent off for pulling the bobble from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. Casemiro scored yet another goal, with Bruno Fernandes picking up an assist.
United did carve out a few promising opportunities in the first half, with Amad Diallo frequently finding himself in dangerous positions.
One such moment saw Casemiro float a delicate pass over the top, which Diallo controlled before unleashing a left-footed effort from distance.
However, the attempt lacked conviction, allowing Karl Darlow to make a comfortable save.
There were flashes suggesting Diallo could influence the game, but he faded badly after the break.
He failed to attempt a single dribble and completed just 16 passes before being replaced by Bryan Mbeumo in the 70th minute.
For a player of his talent, more is expected. Diallo has managed just two goals and two assists in 26 league appearances.
He was used as a right wing-back by former manager Ruben Amorim but has played all 11 games under current head coach Michael Carrick.
Diallo is still searching for his first direct goal contribution under the new manager.
Unless his end product improves significantly, he risks being reduced to a peripheral squad option.
Diallo moved to United from Atalanta for an initial fee of £19 million in 2019. He is fully aware of the demands that come with representing Man United.
Much like Antony, he shows promise in ball progression but often runs out of ideas in decisive moments in the final third.
Diallo appears stuck in his development, unable to translate potential into consistent impact.
The talent is undeniable, but the time has come for him to take the next step or risk following a similar path to Antony out of Old Trafford.
