Glutathione Helps Protect Cells and Strengthen the Immune System in Men Over 40, Pharmacist Says
If you've ever been to an IV clinic, you've likely seen all sorts of add-ons on the menu. You're probably familiar with staples like vitamin B and magnesium, but other outliers like glutathione might cause you to do a double take. Still, some of these lesser-known options are well worth a closer look. Glutathione is a tripeptide, which is a small molecule made up of three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamate. Often referred to as the "master antioxidant," glutathione can be thought of as the body's built-in defense system, operating at the cellular level.
"Glutathione supports several functions that become increasingly relevant for men as they age," says Nayan Patel, PharmD, founder of Auro Wellness. "It fuels mitochondrial energy production, strengthens immune resilience, aids the body's natural detoxification processes, and helps manage oxidative stress—which is linked to nearly every age-related disease process."
Though it's produced naturally by every cell in the body, glutathione levels begin to decline naturally in our late 20s. Such a decline only accelerates with time, stress, poor sleep, and environmental exposure. Reduced glutathione levels can manifest physically as reduced energy, slower recovery, diminished mental clarity, and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions.
"Most supplements target a single pathway: energy, immunity, or recovery," Patel explains. "Glutathione operates upstream of all of them. As the body's primary antioxidant, it manages oxidative stress at the cellular level, which is the underlying factor in aging, inflammation, and disease. It also recycles other antioxidants like vitamins C and E, making the rest of your supplement regimen work harder."
One study found that low glutathione levels can increase susceptibility to oxidative stress, which is linked to aging and diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease. Researchers also found that such glutathione imbalances may weaken immune function and play a role in disease progression.
Unlike many supplements where a simple capsule does the trick, glutathione is notoriously difficult to absorb orally because it breaks down in the digestive system. That’s why alternative delivery methods, like IV therapy or topical applications, such as those developed by Patel at Auro Wellness, are often preferred for improving bioavailability.
"For men over 40 who are serious about performance and longevity, glutathione is not just another supplement. Rather, it is the foundation that everything else is built on," Patel says.
