Photo of Republican dressed in blackface resurfaces and sparks criticism
Georgia state Rep. Kasey Carpenter is facing criticism after a blackface photo circulated on social media showing him at a Chattanooga costume party approximately 12 years ago.
Carpenter claimed he dressed as Kanye West alongside his wife, who dressed as Kim Kardashian.
He called the incident a mistake while denying racist intent, stating his constituents know his character.
The timing coincides with his upcoming GOP primary race against Cleve Manis on May 19. House Minority Leader Carolyn Hugley criticized Carpenter, citing his voting record as evidence he doesn't represent all constituents. Georgia NAACP President Gerald Griggs called for an unambiguous apology, noting society hasn't transcended racial considerations despite historical progress.
Carpenter pointed to sponsored legislation supporting minorities, including DREAM Act tuition provisions and tenant protections, though critics argue his record contradicts such claims given current attacks on diversity initiatives.
