MIT’s Kilbridge Will Retire At Season’s End

Tony Kilbridge, who has coached the MIT Engineers for over 20 years, will retire at the end of the season.

During his tenure, the rowing program evolved from competing at Eastern Sprints to becoming a consistent presence at the IRA championships.

A former Harvard rower, Kilbridge brought valuable perspective from his experience as a student-athlete and his time coaching at the University of Virginia.

“While I still have several months to go, I wanted time to say a proper goodbye to the athletes, coaches, alumni, and other friends who have made the last 20 years the most rewarding chapter of my life,” Kilbridge said.

MIT Rowing’s Instagram accounts offers countless examples of Kilbridge’s dedication—from manning the phones during a 24-hour Day of Giving for the women’s team in 2018 to serving as the team’s “resident grill master” at open houses.

The Engineers began the season ranked No. 23 in the IRCA Preseason Coaches Poll. As the season draws to a close in the coming months, so too will Coach Kilbridge’s time at MIT, marking the end of a remarkable era for the program.
