*NSYNC Star Says He Nearly Went Bankrupt, Begged Friends for Help
Joey Fatone couldn't resist tearing' up his bank account—and it nearly cost him everything.
The former *NSYNC singer opened up about his history of financial issues in the new ID docuseries Boy Band Confidential, out now. He also gave a little more insight into some of his troubles while speaking with Fox News Digital, explaining that he “learned the hard way” about how to manage his money.
“Maybe certain people were born or raised to invest money or learn how to deal with it. I did not,” he told the outlet, detailing just how bad things got despite the boy band’s massive success.
Joey Fatone’s Excessive Spending
Things took a downhill turn for Fatone after the group disbanded in 2002, with the singer explaining his put his trust in the wrong accountant.
“I thought that person was looking out for my best interests...I started watching the numbers deplete quicker and quicker than normal,” he explained. “I’m going, ‘This is not right.’ And then it was almost like a snowball effect.”
Looking back at some of his purchases at the time, Fatone asked himself, “What was I thinking?”
“Everybody who comes into money does the same thing. I don’t care who you are,” he continued. “The first thing you probably buy is a car or a house. And then it just trickles away if you’re able to get that money. And let’s be real, certain people in their lives [are] never really taught how to manage or handle money.”
Fatone himself was one of those people.
Fatone's Financial Woes Get Worse
With no new albums or tours bringing in money, Fatone reportedly turned to another accountant for help, one who told him it was time to sell his massive Orlando home or face bankruptcy.
“During Christmas, they shut off the lights because I didn’t pay the bill,” he revealed. Speaking with EWabout that specific incident, he added, “It was horrible. I had family over at my house. Good thing I had the water, but the power just went pew...all my family was there.”
“Was I making a little bit of money? Yes, of course, but it wasn’t enough to even take care of some of the bills of my monstrosity house that I had,” the singer told Fox News Digital. “So many people go bankrupt. So many people have downfalls. It’s just that mine’s in the spotlight.”
According toThe Orlando Sentinel, Fatone tried to unload the mansion for $5.5 million in 2010. He ended up having to put it on the auction block, where it sold for $3.3 million.
He, his then-wife and their children then moved in with his parents, before Fatone asked some of his friends for help.
“I swallowed my pride and said, ‘I need a little bit of help. This is the navigation I need. I don’t need anything astronomical, but I need a little bit of guidance,’” he added. “It was interesting to see where certain people were like, ‘Sure, I’d love to help you.’ And certain people were like, ‘Nope.’ And they’re close friends.”
He said the situation left him knowing who his “real friends” were, cutting off those who turned their backs. “Now that I didn’t have a pot to p--- in, now they don’t care about me,” he explained.
He never filed for bankruptcy and was able to get back on his feet.
