All About Lena Dunham’s Husband, Luis Felber, & His Reaction To Her Revealing Memoir
Lena Dunham’s relationship with her husband, Luis Felber, is one of her less high-profile romances.
In her memoir, Famesick, which was published on April 14, Dunham shares never-before-heard details about her five-year romance with Jack Antonoff and her affair before their breakup, as well as musings on her own fame and controversies. In an interview with People, Dunham said her husband gave his full support to her while telling her story.
“He’s an effervescently kind person,” said Dunham in the April 13 interview. “And so all that other stuff, like him being funny and cute and cool and creative, is like the cherry on top. I remember Nora Ephron, who was one of my friends and mentors who I write about in the book, had this quote which was like, ‘Never marry a man you wouldn’t want to be divorced from.’ And I don’t plan to get divorced, but I understand what she was saying. Lou is able to really hold people’s complexity and still do everything in a way that’s very anchored in love.”
Dunham and Felber met in 2021 while the Girls creator was working on a film in London. She told The Times of London in an April 13 interview that a mutual friend set them up, telling her that Felber is “not your husband or anything, just a fun-times guy.”
All About Lena Dunham’s Husband, Luis Felber
Dunham’s husband, Luis Felber, is a British-born musician whom she started dating in January 2021. They married in September 2021 after eight months of dating. “I’ve only been alive for 35 years in this lifetime, and I think it’s another archaic thing for guys to hide their feelings,” Felber gushed about their whirlwind romance to the New York Times in 2021. “I’m way more into the flow of getting to know the person. And I think Lena’s the same.”
Felber added, “And I think—I’m going to sound cheesy—but when you find your soulmate, you just know.”
He’s a Musician
Felber is a solo musician now, under the name Attawalpa, and describes his music as “between Prince and Nirvana,” but spent his younger years as a guitarist in touring bands, including for Jamie T. He’s also one of the founders of the label and club night Young Turks.
“I’ve been signed to labels before, and had a bunch of money. They’ll say ‘make something with this’ and that’s really cool, and I did, but then they’re allowed to dabble in it and I really like the sort of DIY, out on the street, aspect of making things,” Felber told Yuck magazine. “Especially with videos, I get to collaborate and evolve with really cool directors and people I’ve been wanting to work with for ages.”
Felber has also written for other artists, including a song for Mick Jagger that was featured on the 2016 series Vinyl.
He’s British-Peruvian
Felber was born in Winchester, England, in 1986 to a Peruvian mom and English father. After living in Chile and Peru in his early childhood, the family relocated to the U.K. when Felber was seven.
Felber told Yuck that he has grown to fully embrace his Peruvian culture. “Most of my school life was in this country [the U.K.] and I felt a bit kind of pressured to hide that side of me. I don’t know if that’s something to do with me or society, but I didn’t really embrace it until recently,” he said.
“It’s part of me. It influences me a lot. It influences me in what I eat, like every day. I’ve tasted Peruvian food and it’s the bomb. I feel like it’s a different world over there, you know. The culture’s different and reflects the past and what the country is like. So like, I’m blessed I’ve had that experience and I’m blessed I can speak Spanish as well as English.”
Felber’s artist name is taken from his full name, which is Luis Delfin Attawalpa Saul Felber. Attawalpa is the name of the last Incan king.
Felber & Dunham Were Introduced By Friends
Unlike in Too Much, in which leads Jessica and Felix meet in a bar, Dunham and Felber were set up through “a series of friends’ machinations,” as Dunham told Vogue France in 2021.
Their first date went effortlessly.
“The first time we hung out, we didn’t stop talking for, like, eight hours,” Felber told the New York Times. “I think it was sort of incredible, you know, I walked into that. I’d been on quite a few dates in the past year. As someone who’s quite open, I find you hold a lot back on your first three dates. Or first 10 dates. I was just a bit fed up with that, so I just walked into the situation very myself, shall I say. And Lena liked that. And she’s the same.”
Felber Has Never Seen ‘Girls’
Felber told the New York Times in 2021 that he had never seen Dunham’s hit show. “Mum was a fan of Girls. I remember when I was touring in my 20s, my mum and my sister were watching that show. But I never watched it,” Felber said.
“When you’re an artist, you’re living in the present, into the future. You’re looking for the next thing,” he said by way of explanation. “Looking back is a thing we shouldn’t really do too much, to be able to move forward with ease.”
They Got Engaged After a Hospital Visit
Felber told Vogue France that he knew he wanted to tie the knot after visiting Dunham in hospital, just a few months after meeting. “I just thought that left me with a funny feeling seeing you not feeling well,” Felber said during Dunham’s Vogue interview. “And then the next day, when you got back, we were in bed, and I said, ‘I just I don’t ever want you to go through that on your own again.’ And you said, ‘Oh, I want to marry you someday.’ And I said, ‘Why don’t we make that someday, soon day?'”
“The next day, I went for a walk with my friend Tom, and he was going on about his life, and I was like, ‘I think I proposed to Lena last night.’ And when I got home, we made it real,” he said.
Dunham & Felber Had A Small But Star-Studded Wedding
The pair married in September 2021, a month after getting engaged, in a small wedding at the Union Club, a members-only club in London. Among their 60 guests was Taylor Swift, who served as one of Dunham’s bridesmaids.
Across their wedding day, Dunham wore three custom Christopher Kane dresses.
A year later, Dunham celebrated their first anniversary with an Instagram post, writing, “A year ago today I jumped at the chance to marry this loyal friend, trusted collaborator and drop dead gorgeous Morphius Lord of Dreams lookalike (the Sandman of the books, not the show).”
“365 days later, he remains #1 in my iPhone favorites and I wake up jubilant every morning we are together and pining when we are apart,” Dunham added. “What can I say, @attawalpa, except that you are my home, my hero and my heart. Let’s keep doing this?”
They Live in London & Connecticut
Felber and Dunham split their time between the UK and the US. Dunham showed off the couple’s renovated Connecticut home, which is next door to her parents, to Architectural Digest in 2022.
“When I was a little kid, I used to dread the idea of ever leaving my parents’ home. I hated leaving for the day to go to school, much less the idea of going to college or getting married,” she wrote, adding that living “10 feet” away from her family is what she’s “always wanted.”
They Worked Together on ‘Too Much’
Felber and Dunham co-wrote and co-produced the Netflix series Too Much, a fictionalized retelling of their love story starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe. However, Felber insisted to Interview Magazine that the show is more fiction than fact.
“You never know exactly what’s going to come up, but [PR people] did tell us that people were going to constantly ask if Will Sharpe and Meg Stalter are us. ‘Are these two people you guys? Is this a biopic?'” Felber said. “And the answer is ‘No, it’s a TV show, duh.'”
Dunham also directed Felber’s music video for “Tucked In Tight,” and Felber wrote the music for her film, “Sharp Stick.”
“[Working together is] the best—I love being directed by her,” Felber told the Times. “It’s like our relationship, it just sort of flows. We don’t have any arguments. She’s obviously very good at what she does.”
