Tottenham can exploit loophole to hand De Zerbi a transfer warchest this summer
Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed why Tottenham Hotspur can afford to back Roberto Der Zerbi with big funds this summer if they do manage to stay in the Premier League.
Reports indicate that Spurs are ready to undertake an ambitious rebuild of their squad in the summer if they manage to avoid relegation.
Roberto De Zerbi has been given a big say on Tottenham’s squad building, as the Italian gets set to put his own imprint on the squad he inherited.
However, the Lilywhites cannot afford to think about the summer window for now, with the club having a lot of work to do to secure their Premier League status after falling to yet another defeat at Sundland.
Missing out on European football could allow Tottenham to spend big
Many experts have pointed out that Spurs have a major cash flow problem at the moment, which could limit their ability to spend big in the summer unless their owners inject more money into the club.
However, journalist Ben Jacobs has now explained that missing out on European football will mean that Tottenham do not need to worry about complying with Financial Fair Play next season, thus allowing them to spend up to 85 per cent of their revenue on transfers.
Jacobs told The United Stand (as relayed by GiveMeSport): “Tottenham will be able to exploit this loophole of no European football, where you’re under Squad Cost Ratio but not Financial Fair Play.
“You can spend 85% of your revenue on transfers and for Spurs even without Champions League football they’ll have pretty decent revenue because of the size of their stadium and their brand has always brought in decent capital and they won’t be bound by Financial Fair Play but also they won’t be bound by that many potential domestic sanctions because in the first year of Squad Cost Ratio you’ve got 30% extra leeway on top of that 85% number, so 115% of total revenue [can be spent] on transfers, without really incurring anything as it’s viewed as a transition year.”
Relegation would mean financial disaster for Spurs
While the lack of European football could give Tottenham some breathing space in the transfer window if they stay up, going down will have disastrous consequences on the club’s balance sheet.
Some believe that Spurs could see their revenue drop by a whopping £250m if they get relegated from the Premier League.
It has been suggested that Tottenham would be forced to offload many of their star men if they go down, as the club would need to significantly reduce their wage bill.
