Winter Storm Watch Issued as 18 Inches of Snow, 60 mph Winds Threaten
Spring technically started nearly a month ago, but several states in the United States are still dealing with heavy snowfall midway through April.
California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington have all been hit with significant snowfall over the past week with nearly four feet of snow falling in California while Oregon and Washington deal with nearly two feet of snow.
Two other states are next, with up for 18 inches of snowfall inbound.
Montana, Wyoming Expected to See up to 18 Inches of Snow
In the latest forecast from the National Weather Service, Montana and Wyoming are now in the path of a strong snowstorm.
"Heavy mountain snow, windy and much colder weather associated with this system will push into the Northwest on Wednesday, reaching into the northern Rockies and northern Great Basin by Thursday morning behind a strong cold front," the National Weather Service said.
In Montana near the Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains, including the following locations: Raynolds Pass, Big Sky, West Yellowstone, and Targhee Pass, up to 15 inches of snow is possible while 45 mph wind gusts hit.
The National Weather Service also offered a word of warning for those attempting to travel in the region.
"Travel could be very difficult and tire chains may be required for some vehicles. Those in the backcountry should ensure they are prepared for dangerous conditions," it said.
Elsewhere in Montana near Cooke City, the National Weather Service is calling for up to 18 inches of snow and 60 mph winds.
In Wyoming, specifically the cities of Lake and Mammoth and near Old Faithful, total snow accumulations between nine and 15 inches possible while winds could gust as high as 55 mph.
What Is a Winter Storm Watch?
A winter storm watch is issued in advance of the storm, usually at least 24 hours beforehand, and indicates the risk of a hazardous winter weather event has increased with at least a 50% chance of its occurence, though additional details are needed before upgrading to a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory.
The winter storm watch is intended to provide enough lead time for those in the region to make plans to stay safe.
As the event becomes imminent, a watch will normally be upgraded to either a warning or an advisory – which indicates an 80% or greater probability of occurence.
The winter storm watch from the National Weather service is in effect from Wednesday night through Thursday evening.
