CLASS OF 2025-26 | MEET SAMUEL OKOYE

This is Samuel Okoye’s second season as Dartford’s definitive right-back. He has made 76 appearances for Ady Pennock’s side so far, 70 of which have seen him named in the starting eleven. He has also chipped in at the other end with two goals to his name, one per season so far.

And his reasons for staying at Princes Park remain the same as last season…

“I joined at the beginning of last season because, I knew about the history of the club and wanted to be a part of that.”

He continues, “I really want to help get Dartford promoted and personally, to keep improving, building consistency in my own game and performances. As a team, we are a strong group and we have a good changing room. If we can stay consistent and keep collecting points and good results, we can have a very good season.”

Samuel’s positivity is intoxicating and pleasing to see. Despite the Darts being on a good run of just one defeat in the last seven matches, that one defeat at Wingate and Finchley was a damaging one in terms of the playoffs. And with just six fixtures remaining, it’s no secret that Ady and his players need our playoff rivals to slip up.

But, take nothing away from the players’ efforts throughout what has been a difficult and disruptive season so far, as injuries and suspensions have taken their toll. Afterall, with 36 games played so far, the Darts have collected points from 27 of them.

Like his teammates, Samuel is aware of the challenges that come with the beautiful game…

“Football can be unpredictable and there are always ups and downs. The biggest challenge we face is, trying to remain focused and continuing to work hard through those moments.”

What does Samuel believe that he brings to this talented group of players at Princes Park?

“I’d say that I’m always trying to improve and push myself physically and mentally. I bring energy and commitment, and I always try to give everything when I’m on the pitch. I work hard for the team.

“My strengths are probably my athleticism, work-rate, and physicality. But, like every player though, there’s always things to improve upon and I’m always trying to develop different parts of my game.”

As he’s mentioned his continued improvement and development, is there anything that this right-back has learnt from football?

“Consistency and discipline. Talent helps but, it’s the daily work and mentality that really makes the difference.

“I was once told to control the controllables, your effort, attitude, and work-rate, and don’t focus on things that you can’t affect.”

He continues, I just love football and have done so since I was young. There’s nothing like the feeling of competing, being part of a team, and playing in front of supporters. And to keep motivated, I remind myself why I started playing and what I want to achieve. That helps to keep me focused.”

And what are those ambitions of his?

“I want to play at the highest level and come out of it feeling like I’ve squeezed everything out of what football had to offer me. And hopefully, to still be in good physical health.”

Being a part-time footballer has its additional challenges, especially when trying to keep oneself match fit. Does Samuel do any additional fitness work during the week?

“Yes, I always try to stay on top of my fitness and recovery outside of training. I mix in different sports, like badminton, etc… And, on matchdays, I try to keep things simple. I focus on preparing well, staying relaxed, and making sure I’m mentally ready to perform.

“As far as other challenges are concerned, managing time and recovery can be difficult. It takes discipline, but it’s part of the journey and something a lot of players at this level have to do.”

Does he have any advice for the younger generation looking to make a career out of the beautiful game?

“Work hard, stay disciplined, and never stop trying to improve. Football can change very quickly, so you have to stay open-minded and ready.”

Wise advice from a player who continues to improve with each passing game. Let’s hope that his career trajectory continues upwards in the colours of Dartford FC.
