Winter Storm Warning Issued as 20 Inches of Snow, 45 mph Winds Emerge: 'Delay All Travel'
Spring remains on hold in the Pacific Northwest.
Earlier this week California dealt with a record April snowstorm that brought nearly four feet of snow to numerous locations including Donner Summit, which received 43.5 inches of snow.
This week Oregon and Washington are bracing for heavy snowfall while Alaska continues to receive winter storm warnings well into April as well as the National Weather Service announced winter storm warnings for all three.
National Weather Service Predicts up to 20 Inches of Snow
Heavy mountain snow in California is expected to finally subside, but unsettled weather will shift its focus to the Four Corners on Tuesday as the upper low/trough penetrates farther inland, while a separate round of rain and high-elevation snow arrives in the Pacific Northwest ahead of another system.
An initial winter storm watch from the National Weather Service called for up to 20 inches of snow and 45 mph winds through Oregon and Washington. Just two days later, that initial forecast appears to be spot on.
In its latest update, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Oregon as the Northern Cascades are expected to see total snow accumulations between 12 to 20 inches with winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
Meanwhile in the Eastern Cascades will see total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches above 4,000 feet with the heaviest snow along the Cascade crest. Winds will gust as high as 45 mph.
Also hit with a winter storm warning, Washington will see similar snowfall in the Cascades of Snohomish and Northern King Counties, Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit Counties, Cascades of Pierce and Lewis Counties, and Cascades of Southern King County, which will see up to 20 inches of snow and 40 mph wind gusts. Stevens Pass and Holden Village will also see heavy snow in the area as up to 12 inches of snow hits.
In Alaska, the cities of Tetlin, Tok, the Taylor Highway south of MP 9, Tanacross, the Tok Cutoff north of MP 105, the Alaska Highway east of MP 1392, Northway, and Alcan are expected to receive up to 12 inches of additional snow.
Meanwhile, the cities of Donnelly Dome, Black Rapids, and the Richardson Highway from MP 224 to MP 259 will receive a bit more snow as up to 18 inches of snow hits the region on Tuesday.
