Spain reopens Tehran embassy, resumes diplomatic activity
Antonio Sanchez-Benedito Gaspar announced that Spain has officially reopened its embassy in Tehran after a period of suspension, resuming diplomatic operations.
The ambassador confirmed on Monday that he has returned to Tehran and that the embassy is once again operational, marking a step toward restoring diplomatic engagement.
In a statement shared on social media, he said that the reopening was completed together with the diplomatic team as part of efforts to support de-escalation and promote peace initiatives in the region.
He added that the decision was made in line with guidance from Spain’s foreign ministry and aims to contribute to diplomatic efforts focused on regional stability.
Spain had previously taken a critical stance toward the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, while reports indicated tensions over potential trade measures between Washington and Madrid.
In recent weeks, escalating military and political tensions led several countries to scale down or suspend diplomatic missions in Tehran due to security concerns.
However, the gradual reopening of embassies, including that of Azerbaijan, is being seen as a cautious sign of easing tensions and a partial return to normal diplomatic activity.
Spain’s move to reopen its embassy highlights a broader trend of tentative diplomatic normalization, even as underlying regional tensions remain unresolved.
