Mets Minors Recap: Morabito Powers Syracuse to Victory

As the first two weeks of the minor league season come to a close, all levels aside from the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A) are below .500. These trends continued on Sunday, as all four levels combined when 1-3, with the one win being the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A).

Nick Morabito two-run home run led the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A) to a narrow 3-2 victory. A.J. Ewing and Jacob Reimer both added extra base hits, including a Reimer two-run home run in the Binghamton (Double-A) loss. The top prospects for the Brooklyn Cyclones (High-A) and the St. Lucie Mets (Low-A) had quiet offensive days.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets (7-8) 3, Buffalo Bisons (7-8) 2

Box Score

The Syracuse Mets’ (Triple-A) offense had a solid day in terms of getting on base Sunday with nine hits and two walks. However, they did not fare well with runners in scoring position. For the day, Syracuse was just 1-for-9 with RISP, leaving six runners stranded. Despite the struggles, Morabito’s 442-foot, 109.1 mph, eighth-inning two-run home run paired with Pache’s RBI triple helped lead the team to victory.

The pitching was good in the Syracuse (Triple-A) win on Sunday. After a very good, but short, start from Duarte, the rest of the staff picked up the remaining 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs in the game. The winning decision goes to the flame-throwing Lambert, who lowered his season ERA to 3.60.

Double-A

Somerset Patriots (3-5) 7, Binghamton Rumble Ponies(5-3) 5

Box Score

  • 2B A.J. Ewing: 1-for-4, 2B, R, BB
  • 3B Jacob Reimer: 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
  • LF Chris Suero: 2-for-3, 3B, R, BB
  • RF Jose Ramos: 1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI

Although there was not much hitting for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A) on Sunday, they came through with power when it counted. Despite the loss, home runs by Reimer and Ramos accounted for all five runs. The team went 2-for-5 with RISP, leaving six runners on base.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies’ (Double-A) pitching was up and down on Sunday. Despite scoreless pitching from four of the six pitchers, Hawkins and Gowdy were responsible for all of the runs scored by Somerset in the contest. Hawkins allowed two doubles and a triple, raising his season ERA to 45.00. For Gowdy, despite allowing the two runs, he allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out the side.

High-A

Jersey Shore BlueClaws (5-3) 7, Brooklyn Cyclones (2-6) 0

Box Score

The Brooklyn Cyclones (High-A) struggled mightily on Sunday, falling to 2-6 on the season. The only bright spot was the Mets’ seventh-ranked prospect, Mitch Voit, who reached base three times out of the leadoff spot. Outside of that, Brooklyn (High-A) was 0-for-4 with RISP and left five runners on base.

After a very good start from the right-hander Cota, things fell apart quickly on the pitching side of things for the Brooklyn Cyclones (High-A). Díaz and Hodges combined to allow eight hits and seven runs, with five being earned. Díaz earned the losing decision after a blowup fifth inning, and another run was allowed in the sixth.

Single-A

Dunedin Blue Jays (5-4) 13, St. Lucie Mets 6

Box Score

The St. Lucie Mets (Single-A) offense was good on Sunday, totaling 10 hits and three walks. They were excellent with RISP, going 5-for-5, however, left seven runners on base as a team. The only extra base hit came from catcher Chase Meggers. Tommy Pham was removed from the contest after walking in the fifth inning.

It was a dreadful start for the St. Lucie Mets (Single-A) on the pitching side of things. All 13 earned runs allowed were surrendered in the first five innings. Lara earned the losing decision after allowing five earned runs in his two-inning start. A highlight is that rehabbing southpaw Minter pitched a spotless sixth inning that included a strikeout.
