APGC Appoints Shan as General Manager

Singapore: Nick Shan, a globally respected golfing administrator, has joined the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) in the role of General Manager.

Shan’s impressive resume and strong ties with the golfing industry across the Asia-Pacific saw him beat off more than 120 applicants for the post with the region’s ruling amateur body.

Father-of-two Shan has worked in golf for more than 20 years in different areas, including tournament management, event operations, and golf development across Asia-Pacific and Southern Africa. He has spent the past decade at The R&A as Assistant Director Asia-Pacific, based out of Singapore.

Within that position, Shan served as Tournament Director at all APGC championships between 2016 and 2022, reporting directly to the APGC Board of Directors, delivering strategic and operational leadership.

He also developed and presented a strategic plan to the APGC Board in 2020, securing approval for the construction of a new APGC website and a strengthening of the organisation’s digital presence and stakeholder engagement.

As the APGC’s first General Manager, South African-born Shan will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organisation that is the representative body for 47 male and female national golf associations.

As well as acting as the hosting partner for major amateur events in the region, the APGC supports member organisations, works to ensure adherence to the Rules of Golf as approved by The R&A, and partners with the Masters Tournament and the International Golf Federation in the promotion of golf.

Last month, the APGC announced its calendar of events for 2026 which comprises a total of nine championships spread across six countries and territories – China, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Philip Hassall, Chairman of the APGC, said: “Adept at Tournament Director duties and sponsor management, Nick has proven expertise in delivering high-profile championships, fostering stakeholder relationships, and driving strategic growth initiatives.

“Nick has delivered more than 100 professional and amateur tournaments across multiple continents and has all the attributes we were looking for. Furthermore, he’s had close ties with the APGC in recent years, is well-known to all our Board members as well as being familiar with how the Confederation operates.

“We’re delighted now to welcome Nick on-board. We believe his appointment is an important moment in the history of the Confederation, representing the dawning of a new, exciting era.

“As well as overseeing our array of championships, he’ll be tasked with looking into the areas of governance, finance and transparency within the APGC. He’ll also focus his attentions on developing a far-reaching strategic plan that will map out a clear path for the Confederation into the next decade.”

In addition to acting as Tournament Director at the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) since its inauguration in 2018, Shan has managed and co-ordinated the Asia-Pacific Amateur (AAC) Academy and WAAP Academy, supporting regional player development of developing countries. Among other things, he was also Technical Delegate/Tournament Director for the golf tournaments at the Asian Games in 2018 and 2023.

Prior to joining The R&A in 2016, Shan worked with the Sunshine Tour in South Africa and the Asian Tour and had a period as Event Co-ordinator of the Faldo Series in Asia.

“The Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation has a rich history dating back to 1963, and a wonderfully exciting future ahead of it. I’m honoured to join the Confederation in a full-time capacity at this time of opportunity,” said 46-year-old Shan, who will assume the post on April 1.

“Given its diverse membership across such a large geographic area, a growing calendar of events and strong ties with The R&A and Augusta National, I believe the Confederation is uniquely positioned to expand its influence and fulfil its true potential in the golfing world,” he added.
