The Truth About Elon Musk and Jeffrey Epstein
Elon Musk said he will pay the legal defense fees for anyone who “speaks the truth” about Jeffrey Epstein and gets sued for doing so.
But the backlash was predictable. People on social media yelled: Musk is an abuser! He’s doing this to cover his tracks. As one commenter put it on our Facebook page, “He only made that statement to make himself look not guilty.”
But what do the actual documents show? They literally released every email Musk and Epstein exchanged, so we have the answer. Musk had little to do with Jeffery Epstein.
Is Elon Musk Connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s Sex Trafficking Ring?
The answer is no. But the documents that prove it offer a very interesting glimpse into Musk’s world, and how Jeffrey Epstein tried to lure people to his island.
The Email Evidence Shared & Analyzed
In this email exchange from Christmas Day 2012, Epstein offers to send a helicopter to pick Musk up and bring him to the island. Musk declines, saying “a peaceful island experience is the opposite of what I’m looking for.” Musk wanted to party in St. Barts instead. Then Epstein plays his card: “the ratio on my island might make Talulah uncomfortable” to try and lure him in. Epstein is talking about the ratio of women to men. Musk’s response? “Ratio is not a problem for Talulah.” Then he doesn’t go.
Then in another email from a month earlier, Epstein asks Musk how many people he’ll need the helicopter for to get to the island. Musk replies: “Probably just Talulah [his wife at the time] and me. What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?” This is the email that launched a thousand headlines. Out of context, it sounds damning. But read it alongside the Christmas exchange and just apply common sense, Musk isn’t asking anything sinister. He’s saying: I don’t want to be bored on an island with you. What days are there going to be things going on? Musk is also bringing his wife. But even in this case, he does not end up going.
Then there’s this exchange from Christmas 2013, a full year later, and Epstein is still trying. This time they actually get close to making it happen. They go back and forth on dates, settle on January 2nd, and Musk even starts working out logistics: “I could fly back early on the 3rd. We will be in St. Bart’s. When should we head to your island on the 2nd?” But then on December 30th, Epstein pulls out: “Bad news. Unfortunately, my schedule will keep me in New York. I was really looking forward to finally spending some time together with just fun as the agenda.” Musk says: “No problem.”
This is the closest they come to meeting on the island, and it still doesn’t happen. And to be clear, Musk isn’t flying to the Caribbean to visit Epstein. Like the entire billionaire and celebrity class, he’s already in St. Barts for the New Year, he’s just thinking about a quick layover for what is outlined in his email for stay likely less than 24 hours. Epstein cancels on him, but Musk also isn’t showing much excitement or interest, or even suggesting he would stay for long.
The last email exchange is from September 2014. Epstein name-drops Reid Hoffman to entice Musk to visit: “You are welcome to the island. Reid is coming with Joi Ito on the 6th of Dec. Come visit.” It shows Epstein’s playbook: using one high-profile name to lure another. Musk’s reply: “Don’t know.” Musk doesn’t end up visiting him.
So what is the truth about Elon Musk and Jeffery Epstein?
Whether you love or hate Elon Musk, the emails above are what was used to claim that “Elon Musk had more extensive ties to Epstein than previously known.” I’ll include even more exchanges below so you can draw your own conclusion. But even in the most aggressive interpretation of these documents, even the New York Times does not allege that Musk was involved in any criminal activity or wrongdoing. Though they do read the above email exchanges proof they were on “friendly terms.” I read it more as Epstein invites him to his island while Musk is already in the Caribbean, and Musk is reluctantly open but would rather do other things and always does other things.
The “wild party” email contradicts the narrative in context. Musk didn’t want Epstein’s island, he wanted to party with his wife in a livelier atmosphere of St. Barts. The one time they almost met on the island, Musk only commits to less than 24 hours there. And even that doesn’t happen, Epstein cancels, maybe because Musk wasn’t committing to being there for long at all.
You can read into this whatever you want, and even speculate that the two were closer than Musk wants to portray. But with the full context in mind, that speculation doesn’t have a lot of air to breathe and there is no reason, even in the most anti-Musk reading, to connect Musk to Epstein’s criminal behavior.
How many times did Elon Musk meet Jeffrey Epstein?
Here are the known meetings:
- 2009: Townhouse visit (Manhattan, NYC): Musk says he visited Epstein’s home for “about 30 minutes in the middle of the afternoon” with Talulah Riley, who was “curious about meeting this strange person for a novel she was writing.” He said they saw “weird art” but nothing inappropriate (Musk’s account, not from released documents).
- Feb 25, 2013: SpaceX HQ visit/lunch (Hawthorne, CA): Emails show Epstein coordinated lunch at SpaceX and later wrote to thank Musk for the “tour.” It’s unknown whether Musk was there for the tour, but Epstein did email him to thank him for it.
- Aug 2015: Dinner (California): Epstein emailed himself a photo and described having dinner with “zuckerburg” and “mu=k” (confirmed by documents; photo shows Musk and Zuckerberg seated next to each other).
What other connections and correspondences exist?
- Sep 25, 2012: Epstein writes “come visit me on my island… bring your friend or friends.” Musk replies: “Sounds good, will try to make it.”
- Oct 2012: Musk writes “The world needs more romance” to Epstein and forwards Epstein’s questions about electrifying his ranch and island to his cousin Peter Rive, co-founder of SolarCity (Musk’s solar company).
- Jan 2013: Musk cancels a lunch with Epstein on St. Barts, saying he’s fallen ill.
- March 2013: Epstein congratulates Musk on a SpaceX launch, says “now its time for fun.” Musk replies he has “to focus on Tesla.” Epstein also asks if Musk has tried Nuvigil, a stimulant.
- Nov 2013: Epstein invites Musk to the Caribbean, mentioning Woody Allen is with him.
- Dec 2014: Epstein’s calendar shows an entry: “ELON MUSK TO ISLAND DEC. 6TH.” A follow-up email from Epstein on Dec. 11 asking “do you think you will be in carib for xmas?” implies Musk didn’t show.
