Rangers v Queen’s Park – Scottish Gas Scottish Cup Preview

QUEEN’S PARK make the short trip west from the heart of the southside to meet Rangers in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup fifth round.

It’s an identical journey they made 364 days ago at this same stage of the competition –  but much has changed in both clubs since then.

Rangers are now bossed by Danny Rohl having had Barry Ferguson, and Russel Martin in charge since Philippe Clement’s tenure and last year’s famous win for the Spiders.

In the away dugout at Ibrox of course will be Sean Crighton who took over as head coach of Scotland’s oldest team in the summer.

Last year's penalty hero Calum Ferrie

There’s contrasting fortunes on both sides as well with Rangers entering this game on the back of a 5-1 win against Kilmarnock, and Queen’s Park suffering a late 1-0 defeat to Ross County in the William Hill Championship.

That said, memories of the result a year ago are still fresh in Spiders minds, Louis Longridge and Seb Drozd, who paired up for the famous winner, and penalty hero Cal Ferrie are still in the squad and the Premier Sports TV cameras are in place for the re-match which kicks off on Edmiston Drive at 2pm.

Looking ahead

Sean Crighton’s head coach previews are sponsored by Glasgow Clyde College.

The head coach, and assistant Jim Duffy, are sponsored by PTS Clean this season.

Matthew Shiels’ home shirt is sponsored by Gordon Whitelaw.

The Season so far...

Rangers began the season under new head coach Russell Martin, but found themselves off the pace in the William Hill Premiership with a succession of early draws in the top flight.

Queen’s Park too began with a point at Raith Rovers and now equal their city neighbours’ tally of nine tied games throughout the season in the Championship

Since then though fortunes have differed.

With Danny Rohl in charge Rangers have returned to the title-race and under the German boss they are one of the form teams in Scotland.

The Spiders, while impressing with their displays under Sean Crighton, have less points on the board than perhaps some performances have warranted and are currently 10th in the second tier, albeit with several games in hand on their nearest rivals Airdrie, Ross County and Morton.

Spiders captain Euan Murray

Any review of this fixture would struggle to overlook the same match a year ago to the very weekend when Seb Drozd stepped off the bench to create one of the competition’s biggest shocks – aided by goalkeeper Calum Ferrie’s last-gasp penalty save. from James Tavernier.

All three have a chance of being involved again this time out and Queen’s Park are hoping lightning can strike twice, but acknowledge Rangers this season are much changed from the side they faced last February.
