R.I.P. Brad Arnold, lead singer of 3 Doors Down

Brad Arnold has died. As the lead singer and songwriter for 3 Doors Down, Arnold was responsible for several of the biggest radio hits of the 2000s—notably the band’s first breakout single, “Kryptonite,” which he famously wrote when he was just 15 years old. The final member of the group’s original three-person lineup to still be with the band, Arnold died this week from complications from renal cancer. Per Variety, he was 47.

Born and raised in Mississippi, Arnold met future band members Matt Roberts and Todd Harrell when they were still just teenagers, recording the first demos for the band when he was 19. An early demo for “Kryptonite” became a favorite on local radio, and by 1999 the group had been signed by Universal, releasing first album The Better Life in early 2000. A mix of earlier demo material and new songs, the album was an instant hit, eventually going platinum seven times over. In addition to his work as a singer and songwriter, Arnold was also the group’s original drummer, playing on Better Life before handing those duties off to new members when the group began touring on the album.

Although it never hit the heights of its debut again, 3 Doors Down had a steady string of successes throughout the 2000s, releasing three more platinum albums before the decade was out. But the following years were harder on the group: In 2012, Matt Roberts announced he was leaving the band to focus on his health, dying of a reported drug overdose in 2016. Harrell, meanwhile, was charged with vehicular homicide after an incident where he was driving under the influence in 2013, and was fired from the group after another arrest in 2014. But Arnold—who also talked openly about his struggles with addiction—persisted. While the band would only release one more album of new material after its two other founders departed—2016’s tepidly received Us And The Night—the group continued to tour periodically, including a 20th anniversary celebration of The Better Life in 2023. (They also ran into controversy due to Arnold’s political affiliations and booking decisions—notably when the group opted to play at the first Trump administration’s inauguration in 2017.)

Arnold announced in 2025 that he was suffering from stage 4 renal cancer, canceling all of the band’s scheduled performances. The group issued a statement today on social media, confirming news of his death: “With heavy hearts, we share the news that Brad Arnold, founder, lead singer, and songwriter of 3 Doors Down, passed away on Saturday, February 7th, at the age of 47.”
