Mom Shares 7 Year-Old Daughter’s Last Visit With Grandpa Before He Killed Himself

A mother recently shared a TikTok showing her 7-year-old daughter’s final moments with her great-grandfather. The reason for the goodbye was not a sudden death or medical emergency…it was planned. He was scheduled to die through Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID).

Karly Vavra intended to share a touching moment, but for many Pro-Life advocates, this is deeply heartbreaking. It reveals how physician-assisted suicide changes the way we understand death, dignity, and even what we teach children about the value of human Life.

Before bringing her children to say goodbye, Vavra explained what was about to happen.

“I always try to be honest with my children,” she told PEOPLE. “I explained that Big Papa (what my kids called him) was in a lot of pain and that he would be going to meet Big Grandma on Saturday (my grandma also did MAID this year).”

PEOPLE described her explanation this way: “She used simple, gentle language to walk them through what was coming. ‘I explained that a very nice doctor and nurses were coming and they were going to give him some medicine and he would fall into the best sleep ever but forever, and that he wouldn’t be in pain anymore,’ she says.”

The video itself shows a quiet, intimate moment. The young girl can be seen snuggling beside her great-grandfather as they watch a show together, sharing what looks like a peaceful moment.

The mother, Karly, chose to post the video publicly because she believes in what Medical Assistance in Dying represents.

“I posted this because I truly believe MAID can be a wonderful thing,” she told PEOPLE.

“Letting people go the way they want, with dignity, and not suffering,” Karly said. “I am a very open, understanding person and believe in ‘your body your choice…’”

Although these views on assisted death can seem well-intentioned, they are deeply troubling.

Children are being taught that death can be scheduled. That doctors don’t only help heal, but they can intentionally end life. That suffering makes someone’s life disposable. That “forever sleep” is a solution to life’s problems.

Physician-assisted suicide reframes killing as care and presents death as a treatment. It places vulnerable people — the elderly, the sick, and the suffering — in a position where ending their life is portrayed as merciful, responsible, or even loving.

True compassion does not eliminate suffering by eliminating the sufferer.

This story is not just about one family. It is a warning about what happens when society decides that some lives are no longer worth living — and teaches even its youngest members to accept that as normal.
