Sports briefs: Novato wrestler takes win at San Marin tourney
Novato High heavyweight Braeden Carroll added more gold to his trophy case Saturday after a dominating display at San Marin High’s annual Green & Gold tournament.
A takedown in the second period of the championship gave Carroll the 17-0 win over El Cerrito’s Andrew Brital. Carroll made quick work of his opponents, going 4-0 in the tournament. San Marin heavyweight David Coronado went 1-2.
Novato’s Jiriah Vannasy (4-2) pinned Rainer Grabenkort of Archie Williams High in a 126-pound consolation match. Vannasy took fourth place, while Grabenkort (2-3) placed sixth.
San Marin’s Spencer Sisneros pinned Petaluma’s Alexander Alcantara Torres to secure fifth place at 120 pounds. Sisneros, in his first match of the day, pinned Novato’s Elias Asprer (1-2). The Mustangs’ Levi Manville (3-2) placed fifth at 157 pounds.
The Mustangs’ Alson Conkey rallied with a pair of third-period takedowns for a 18-13 victory over Montgomery’s Jackson Roach to claim fifth place at 190 pounds.
The Peregrine Falcons’ Kiran Toy (2-2) scored a technical fall over the Mustangs’ Landon Pearce (3-2) in a second-round matchup at 175 pounds. Terra Linda’s Laszlo Chaffee (2-2) and Toy were on track to the medal rounds before each suffered back-to-back losses late.
San Marin’s Orion Smith (1-2) earned a technical fall win over Novato rival Indy Sehhat (0-2) in a 113-pound consolation match.
San Marin placed 11th, with Novato 13th, followed by Terra Linda (24th) and Archie Williams (27th) in the 36-team field. Montgomery narrowly outscored Ukiah for first place.
Boys basketball
Down its top scorer due to injury, San Rafael fell short in the title game of the Rose City Tournament at Cardinal Newman, fallings 64-54 to Enochs from Modesto on Saturday night.
Luke Shapiro still nabbed all-tournament honors, scoring 33 points across the first two games before missing out on Saturday’s final.
Wyatt Tornello paced the Bulldogs with 24 points and seven rebounds en route to all-tournament honors. Jax Aguillion had 13 points and Paxton Ishikawa scored eight in his first career start.
- Evan Brewster had 20 points and 10 rebounds as Terra Linda started fast in a 68-30 win against Sonoma Valley on Saturday. The Trojans (4-2) raced out to a 19-4 first-quarter lead and cruised from there. Kaden Martin had 15 points and four steals and Wes Harrison scored 12 points. TL resumes play on Thursday at the Frank Wells tournament at Albany High.
Girls basketball
Kitty White scored 19 points and Maddie Petersmeyer added 10 as Redwood picked up a 55-37 win against Colfax on Saturday.
The Giants (6-1) trailed 19-9 after the first quarter but turned the game around in the second quarter and pulled within 23-21 at halftime. Redwood extended to a 38-29 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Beatrice Nass and Elsa Houtkooper scored six points apiece for Redwood.
- Marin Catholic (2-6) picked up a 71-39 win against Evergreen Valley in its final game at the St. Francis tournament on Saturday.
- Archie Williams (2-3) fell 59-32 against Maria Carrillo on Saturday night.
Boys soccer
Tam (2-1-2) sustained its first loss of the season in a 3-0 defeat against Vintage at the Mission City Invitational at San Rafael High on Saturday night. The host Bulldogs (3-2-2) took on Gonzales in the final game of the tournament, battling to a 0-0 tie.
All told, Marin teams went 3-3-1 with Terra Linda enjoying the most success with wins over San Rafael and Madera South. Archie Williams had the other win for the county, 5-3 against Alisal on Friday night.
